Thu, 16 July 2009 ![]() The 2009 Emmy Award nominees were released this week, and while there are plenty of old guard classics filling the lists, there are also a few surprises-- especially in the "Best Comedy Series" category, which sees its first animated program since 1961 with a nod to Family Guy. Joining Seth McFarlane's controversial show on the "best" list are Entourage (great), Flight of the Conchords (great), Weeds (never seen it), How I Met Your Mother (don't find it funny), and of course 30 Rock (great) and THE OFFICE. Steve Carell is once again nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, and Rainn Wilson gets another nod in the Best Supporting Actor category. Unfortunately, Carell is up against fellow NBC powerhouse Alec Baldwin as well as Jemaine Clement from FOTC, Jim Parsons from The Big Bang Theory, Tony Shaloub from Monk, and Charlie Sheen for Two and a Half Men. It's funny to see Clement nominated without Bret Mackenzie, since the show is such a duo. Anyone who watches TBBT surely appreciates Parson's turn as "Sheldon," but is it enough to take the trophy? While Sheen's show grabs big numbers, it's surely scoffed at by most in the Hollywood comedy elite. Shaloub used to own this category, but momentum tells me Baldwin with continue to be the odds on favorite. Rainn Wilson faces an equally tough crop, including Jon Cryer, from Two and a Half Men, Kevin Dillon from Entourage, Neil Patrick Harris from How I Met Your Mother, and Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan from 30 Rock. Jeremy Piven, the usual winner, wasn't even nominated this year, so the category is a bit more wide open than in the past-- I know the internet seems to lap up most anything NPH does, but I've just never found his horn-dog "Barney" character to be amusing in the least. As for Cryer, see Charlie Sheen in the above paragraph. Jack McBrayer is amusing as Kenneth, of course, but he's definitely a smaller part of 30 Rock's success. I love me some Johnny Drama, but I'd probably lay money on Tracy Morgan taking it home So what do you guys think? Do the Office boys have a snowball's chance? Was season five of The Office funny enough to overthrow the competition? Let us know. For a full list of all the 2009 Emmy nominations, go HERE. Pleased to see Carell nominated as usual, and I think there's a fairly reasonable chance of him taking the award.
4 writing noms for 30 Rock seems unreasonable. They should limit to two or three per category at the tops.
Other noms I was pleased to see include Parsons in Big Bang Theory (though with the show was nominated), Mad Men's noms, Amy Poehler AND Kristen Wiig for Best Supporting Actress, and Justin Timberlake's noms for his work on SNL.

Also, Jenna Fischer got engaged!
I'm looking forward to the next podcast.

Fischer had a lot of emotional moments this season, such as the storyline with her dad and her salesman storyline alongside Michael and Ryan.

No, you didn't mention Krasinski, but other people did and have (and seem to mention him every year).
My point is just that neither of those two actors have parts that are truly "wacky" enough to grab the attention of a panel of judges. And while Fischer may have done some decent work, history tells us that the judges prefer Jamie Presley's trailer-trash character to what Pam engages in on a weekly basis.
That's not to say I don't think Krasinski and Fischer aren't good at what they do-- just that their characters are too subtle, for the most part, to win these sorts of awards.
Damn, I totally forgot about that! Maybe there are some kinds of rules about what qualifies as a "guest actress" on a show, and maybe Ryan was around too long or in too many episodes to qualify. But be that as it may, she definitely should have made the cut over many of these other noms. OK, that Aniston (don't just mean to single her out, either) appearance was amusing, but definitely just a drop in the bucket compared to what Amy Ryan brought to The Office.
