Thu, 8 October 2009 NBC.com STILL hasn't bothered to update their "next on" page since "The Meeting," so once again this comes from Wikipedia: NIAGARA | 10.08.09 | 9/8c (one hour) The Office travels to Niagara Falls to celebrate Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam's (Jenna Fischer) wedding. Michael (Steve Carell), Dwight (Rainn Wilson), and Andy (Ed Helms) all want to hook up with guests at the wedding and Michael and Dwight meet twins. --------- So here we are-- the culmination of five years of Jim and Pam romance. NBC is promoting this as "the happy ending," but that seems kind of bizarre to me since we still have twenty or so episodes left in the season, and who knows how many more after that. Still, OK, I get it. We all have (or HAD) a big emotional investment in these characters, and this DOES seem like it should be a big deal, but part of me feels like I am just really over this whole thing. I remember saying that at the end of season three, though, and "The Job" managed to win me back, so maybe tonight's hour long ep will make my grinchy heart grow ten sizes. What do you guys think? Are you excited for this? Have you been looking forward to it, or is it just an hour of "been there, done that"? As always, leave your thoughts in the comments section below and join Kevin and me in the TWSS Chatroom during and after the show to share your thoughts (click on the green "chat" button in the right sidebar). Im not into all the Jim-Pam stuff but when I compare this to many of the other Jim-Pam moments, like Pam in Stress Relief, this one stands at the top.
And I was enjoying the cold open somewhat until everyone started puking. I was watching this episode with someone who had never seen the office and it wasnt the first thing you would want to show. :P
Also, Cafe Disco 2, anyone? :)
Really the entire first half of the episode was quite strange. Even though this is The Office, can anything ever go remotely right? After Jim's big speech we get the awkward moments from Michael/Jim. Turns out Jim is quick on his feet, clever, and a pretty smart guy until it's convenient for the writers to make him not that way.
The wedding itself was all right. Jim and Pam running off was sweet, I suppose. But when they came back for the second wedding, and the brothers (and apparently all the office members) surprise them with that YouTube hit. Turns out we've already seen that like 10 million times or so, so it's really not too humorous. May have been saved by the Dwight kick, though.
On the plus side, some actual laughs in this episode, unlike the last couple. Don't give me this 'best ever' stuff, however, as I can counter with: Season 2.
Good on you, Jimbo. If I were in his shoes, I probably would have purchases those tickets as well. Hell, I'll cross my fingers that no YouTube wedding sensation breaks out anywhere near the date of my theoretical future wedding.
This episode had everything I love about The Office inside it, and proved to me that you can marry the main love interests of a show, and still be what you were when you started: fun.

One of my favorite lines from this ep: "I tore my scrotum." Haha!
I'd give it a 5/10. Solid start, but it feels like they ran out of ideas to fill the second half. That's probably the reason for the unnecessarily long dancing scene and Kevin's stinky shoes plot line (do we really need to be reminded of that again??). And what are their intentions with that OMFG development at the end with Pam's mom?
What hotel would ever throw away guests' shoes, no matter how stinky they are? Even if we give it a pass, why didn't he make a quick trip somewhere to get some sort of shoes? I even believe that Kevin wearing a suit with running shoes (or a slipper, or a sandal, or whatever the F else) would have been 5,000 times funnier than what they did!
Sloppy writing. We deserve better.
I suppose most of me is impressed by the fact they got this thing over so quickly. The "bizarre" aura and sense of timing the thread-starter referenced is a good thing. The Jim and Pam wedding was an inevitable plot-point they covered as soon as they could this season, and so now we can move on to fresher developments and moments.
And it didn't help that this episode was friggin' hilarious. I'm definitely over the Jam romance (the pregnancy tipped me over in a bad way) but this will probably be a classic effort because of the supporting characters. I'll be watching this one over and over again.
:-)
I think my favorite part was the cold open. Sure, it's gross, but it was hilarious. Creed didn't get any lines this episode, but him sitting back chowing down on his noodles while everyone around him is hurling does remind us who he is.
second part was just weird "oh look the characters are dancing again, oh hahaha" and stanley was totally out of character. Wasn't it a few weeks ago we were told "stanley hates crowds, loud music and dancing"? yet there he is, *twice* dancing around with everyone eles.
keven seemed to get dumped on a ton in this episode, between oscar putting him down and the shoes thing, i thought we were going to see keven cry.
and the we got that stupid montage at the end, felt like a totally different shows series ender! it went on for way too long and the continuity during that whole sequence was mish-mashed.
then we get michaels and pams mom to give them something to write about for the rest of the season hmm
altho all the comments ive read so far, i guess im the only one who didnt love it =/
It's been an interesting start to the season. I agree with some of the posts each week that these past few episodes have been eh, "B/B-" There has definitely been some great lines, but I think I'd trade a few of the laughs for a solid episode with more discreet humor. Perhaps things will settle down now that the wedding and baby announcement are over.
And thanks for the chat last night. It was great seeing so many people there and Matt and Kevin, please continue your hard work on the podcasts. Can't wait to hear your thoughts!
But Niagara, NY? It looks like an ARMPIT. Dirty, rundown, past its heyday. Buffalo is a little better (not by much, IMO)-- but if you're going for THE FALLS, then you definitely need to cross the border.
Anyway, I may have liked this episode. It was so completely, aggressively absurd, and I laughed at some points and stared in dumb wonder at several others. It was unpredictable... at least, to me.
Written by Greg Daniels and Mindy Kaling. Man, I have to think that's a fascinating partnership.
The cold open was funny except I didn't really want to eat after that. And awww man Micheal hooking up with Pam's mom. Pure comedy gold right there, and Dwight being a total dick to Pam's hot friend. Typical Dwight.
The only part I didn't like when Jim accidently mention the pregnancy, thats when I could see the episode going south from there, but I am glad they saved it with Andy's ripped up balls. What too early?
Amazing Episode! Lets hope Jim and Pam stil together For ev ev ev, For ev ev ev, For ev ev ev, Forever on the dance floor!
The wedding itself was so offbeat and "office staff heavy." But something worked here. It was like watching a montage of great goofy moments, especially the dancing scene. I cringed to even hear the sentence "i tore my scrotum" Is this even possible???
The dancing in Andy's room scene did make me think of the cafe disco episode with the dance off, but it was still enjoyable to watch.
I am bracing myself for you two to hate the episode, but I for one thought it lived up to the hype. And kudos to the writers for making this couple endearing again, running off like that was totally enjoyable. I would too if i told the whole crowd of people at my wedding that she was preggos. Is Jim turning into Michael? Seems like it.
One thing that confused me, on the Dundees episode, wasn't Stanley's wife WHITE??? Was this the mistress? Who was that? That was a weird moment thing to do if they changed the color of a character talk about your continuity issues!
Cold open was just gross - I was eating dinner as I watched it =/
Everyone got lots of air time - I LOVE Dwight as the stud. I love the combo of Oscar/Kevin. Andy was classic.
The toast had me in tears (until Jim blew it).
The twist with Jim and Pam eloping was so them - I bought it and loved it! I was in tears again with Jim's "plan C, plan B, plan A" talking-head.
Michael, you go! I'm looking forward to the repercussions of that hookup next episode!
Loved it, can't wait for our faithful Human Resources Coordinator & Traveling Salesman (that's what Kevin is, right?) to discuss it!
I only just got around to watching this ep. And I have to say I liked it. I'll leave the extraneous stuff for the other posters, but the one moment I wanted to comment on was Jim cutting his tie. Up until then, my affection for Jam wasn't dead, but just at a hum. But when he did that, like the Grinch, my heart grew three sizes at that moment. That's when I knew it was going to be OK.
At first the speeches were so painfully awkward that I didn't know if I was going to enjoy this episode, but I felt like the wedding was very rewarding. It made waiting five seasons for Pam and Jim to get married totally worth it.
Maybe the DVD commentary for this episode will be funny
I could have done without the rest of the episode. Don't get me wrong, there were a few moments here and there that I found myself laughing at...Kevin's hairpiece, Andy's scrotum, and the final funny, yet disturbing visual of Kevin icing his feet. Dwight's hook-up seemed implausible (just how drunk was Isabel??), and please erase the awful visual of Michael being dragged into Pam's mom's room. (shiver) I guess this will give new meaning to the notion of treating every work day as if Pam's mother will be arriving.
If they handle the baby's birth with as much aplomb as they handled the wedding, then I will be thrilled.
Hey Kevin & Matt: I'm still catching up on the podcasts of this season so apologies if you've already said. They'll have to give Pam a few weeks of "maternity leave" so does Jenna Fischer have any movie projects lined up?
(although I did giggle when Andy fell, and when jim cut his tie.)
Let me explain, We have been watching pam and jim for five stinking years! We deserved more, we deserved a wedding that was, well funny, and an episode that touched us. We needed a wedding that beat Casino Night, and we didn't get it.
I loved Jim's dinner speech - I was crying and then laughing at Andy crying at the same time. Also loved Andy's bow tie at the wedding. In fact, I think Mr. Bernard stole the episode. The torn scrotum thing was obviously over the top, but he totally pulled it off.
Overall I think the writers handled this episode very well (except for the cold open. Would Pam seriously ask Phyllis to change her SOAP? Come on.)
And the cold open was disgusting!
Cold open: split decision. I was completely grossed out but my husband laughed his head off. Would be interested in seeing the correlation between people who thought that cold open was funny and people who enjoy The Three Stooges, because as Dave Barry once pointed out, The Stooges are most appreciated by men and second most, by mentally deranged people.
RE: the fact that Jim and Pam got married on the Canadian side...it turns out that its' easier and faster to get a Canadian marriage license than a US one; you fill out an application, producea birth certificate and two forms of ID, and that's it; the marriage license is valid immediately. So I guess technically Pam and Jim could have filled out an application on the spot.
Question: What's the story with Andy's pants? I watched the scene several times where he busted his move, and couldn't figure out where those damned keys must have been in order to do the damage they did; unless his keys and pockets were a foot long it's just impossible...but that was so funny, really, who cares?
Jim's speech was terrific, as I think so much of the writing in this episode was; but he could have bailed himself out of the "Except Pam" comment by pointing out that the person who is being toasted never raises a glass. NExt time you watch a special about Queen Elizabeth, which I'm sure happens frequently, ;), I'm sure you'll notice that she never sings "God Save THE Queen" nor raises her glass when the toast is "To the Queen."
I thought the dancing down the aisle was so much fun I almost forgave the writers for taking a really lazy way out; I mean, if you saw the original YouTube video, you saw it all.
With Pam's sister mistaking Kevin for Gil...wouldn't it have been more interesting to have it be Andy with Oscar, to follow up from "Gossip" where he thinks he's gay?
But really, that's not much to question in an hour long episode. Vive l'Office!
BTW Matt: How come you're always asking for repeated annual rituals (Christmas Party, Dundees) but not weddings, of which this is only the second in six years? A therapy issue... ;)
Couldn't help but think throughout the episode that some relatively small rewrites could have made this a series finale. Other than Dwight whiffing with the hygienist, this episode seemed to leave just about every character on a high note. Perhaps the basic structure of the episode has been in place for a long time, with the various subplots patched in just to keep the show going beyond its natural story arc. The writers definitely struck an emotional tone signaling that a key part of what made us love the show so far has ended with this episode, and wherever we're headed now with the Jambino and beyond, I at least appreciate that this could be the last hurrah for a great series, and any future laughs will be icing on the cake.
Two questions though- how did the co-workers decide who's side to sit on? And secondly, didn't Michael promise everyone Friday and Monday off if they went to the wedding? I thought the message Erin left about DM being closed said something about today and Friday. I could be wrong. I better go watch it again.
It seems that the writers are creating situations such as Kevin's stinky shoes, Andy's scrotum, Angela's stick-up-the-butt annoyance to create the laughs. It doesn't feel organic.
However, Michael slinking off with Pam's Mom really bugs me. In some weird way it reminded me of when he hooked up with Jan. It's just so wrong. It's with a woman that is absolutely "do not touch" material, a mother figure (which in a way I felt Jan represented)and just...ewww. When Pam finds out, she's gonna puke and puke.

Overall, this episode made me feel all gooey and happy inside, so I really have nothing to nitpick about. However, I am already dreading what Kevin and Matt will say. Come on guys, show some love!
First, I feel like we were left hanging on the whole Me-Maw debacle. Yes, we find out in the end that she stayed, but there's no real closure to the situation. Is Michael's talk with her supposed to be that closure? It doesn't feel like it.
Secondly, while Kevin's shoe issue is funny and a running gag about his foot issues, I feel like that time could have been put to better use in Jim manning up and dealing with the issues rather than going off drinking with Michael and Dwight and not being available for Pam with the Andy...er...situation. (And speaking of Jim being off with Michael and Dwight, that seems out of character, and I feel like there was a cut scene that might have explained that he'd been pulled out against his will, or something. As it stands, it makes him seem like a bit of a....well, a bit of a Roy.)
I loved the dancing. I thought the end was a payoff, and I loved that grumpy-upset-Pam is replaced with a happier Pam in the end, but her upset attitude for the majority of the episode left me feeling a little upset as well.
I understand, I think, what the writers were going for. We see Pam had some genuine things to be upset about (her whole wedding being turned into a shotgun-looking wedding before her eyes, to say the least) but the lack of any clear resolution to the matters sort of takes the breath out of this episode's sails.
Now, I do love the dance at the end because it signals a change in Pam's attitude -- she goes from getting upset that things aren't how she planned, to embracing the unexpected with Jim. But, I feel like the cost of getting to that point was too much. The rest of the episode disappointed.

To me, Pam’s original mom seems much more like Pam. So much so that I really couldn't see her hooking up with Michael. However, Mom #2 seems to have more of an edge. And perhaps the writers did that on purpose so that the audience could stomach Mom #2 getting with Michael.
Kelly obviously got a personality transplant between Season 1 and Season 2. Perhaps they took Pam’s Mom to the same place!!! :-D

(On a different note, I'm wondering now in regards to Jim's announcement and then subsequent awkward rewind...could it be that we're going to come full circle and have Jim slowly but surely turn into Michael? It would be a fitting end to the show in a funny sad dark way to have it end exactly where it began, only with Jim in Michael's shoes, and would show us this whole arc of perhaps how Michael came to be Michael. Just a thought. Back to your regularly scheduled Niagra thoughts!)

BUT, if there was any episode to that with it was Jim and Pam's wedding. They needed to overdo the comedy a little bit so it wasn't overloaded with romance.
And also it felt like a 1 hour episode unlike many other 1 hrs.
