The fansites are buzzing today with rumors that NBC is prepping a special episode of THE OFFICE which will introduce characters who will then be spun off into their own series. Say what?  According to TV Guide's Ausiello Report "the proposed Office 2 is not expected to
include any of the mother ship's core cast. In fact, producers are
already casting about for a 'name' to headline the potential show." Now, I'm a pretty big fan of THE OFFICE, but why on earth do I need or want a spin-off show? There have been rumors of the "Dwight" spin-off for a while, and I hope these amount to the same hills of beans. One of the reasons why THE OFFICE is so special is that the cast and crew have a laser-like focus to produce a quality product. A spin-off, even if no cast leave the show to follow it, will surely divide the creative staff... stealing some of the producers and writers we know and love. That way, we end up with two mediocre shows instead of one GREAT one. Am I going a little too 'Cassandra' on you guys? Perhaps. I mean, sure, BUFFY was good, and ANGEL was decent... although after ANGEL started BUFFY pretty much went downhill... hmm. Not sure what to make of this. At the very least... for the love of god, DON'T hire David Spade for the "Michael Scott" role.

Two words why I think these rumors are true: Ben Silverman NBC\\\'s desperate; Heroes is already getting its Origins spinoff. But more importantly: almost all its new shows are flopping. And returning shows like 30 Rock just aren\\\'t catching on. So NBC\\\'s forced into a desperate corner. The public isn\\\'t responding to their new material (I\\\'d be shocked if Chuck, Journeyman & Life air their full seasons.) So when your network\\\'s co-chairman is a credited Exec Producer on one of your few hits, the easy answer: give us something that worked in the past. Someone on OfficeTally pointed out that it could work if the concept is about a DM client. Throw around a talented guy like Will Arnett and don\\\'t re-hash the mockumentary angle. It might just work if the concept isn\\\'t literally \\\"The Office: Utica Branch\\\"

What a horrible idea. \"The Office\" is a mock-documentary about people working at a paper company. Would this spin-off also be a mock-documentary? If not, how could they justify a regular sitcom in \"The Office\" universe. It doesn\'t make any sense to me. NBC can go make a Heroes spin-off. Leave \"The Office\" alone!

Dear God... no David Spade (thankfully, Spade has a sitcom on CBS with a good timeslot so is unlikely to be available). Casting is key. Will Arnett would be wonderful as a different kind of abusive boss. I say make Arnett the regional manager and have Todd Packer the lead salesman (Arnett had an extended cameo in David Koechner’s recent film, The Comebacks). More Packer!! I think I even mentioned it on the podcast; I\'d love to see more of Todd Packer since it would make for a different dynamic than the current characters. I could see them pulling in a Dwight or Ryan during special episodes for sweeps month or something like that. But overall, I like the vibe of keeping this set in the same universe but not cherry-picking any of the Scranton regulars. While I can’t say I jumped for joy at the sound of a spinoff, I’m more than a little disappointed at the naysayers. “Spinoffs? never work? How about “remake of British TV series?? How many of those have worked? Oh, wait… I can think of one. Come on, guys. If the folks behind The Office could create a show that surpassed the beloved original British series, ya think they have a chance of making a halfway decent spinoff? The fact that it will not have Kevin or Angela or any existing cast member shows that they DO know what they’re doing. I welcome this move, and have high expectations that it will be good. At least give it a chance before piling on, okay? (yeah, some of this post is cribbed from my post at OfficeTally. Sue me).
