I ran across this article on Digg.com this morning, and it got me thinking.
Anthony Burch, of Tubewad.com, posted an essay called "The Biggest Changes the Best Shows on TV Need to Make," listing what he thought was "wrong" with all of his favorite (?) shows. Now, it's not like this guy is the voice of his generation or anything, and I find a lot of his comments pretty hyperbolic, so take it with a HUGE grain of salt. What does he think THE OFFICE needs to change? "Create a character whose sole purpose on the show is to punch Pam Beesley in the throat every other episode I'm dead serious. Pam was absolutely adorable in the first and second seasons: her shy, understated glances at the camera frequently worked as the perfect punchline to Michael Scott's ridiculously offensive ramblings, and her blossoming quasi-romance with Jim was cute enough to make even a grown man interested in how it turned out. Season three, however, has taught us that Pam's really just a hugely indecisive bitch... (more)" I think we can all agree that's maybe going a BIT too far. But it makes me curious-- what do YOU guys think the writers should change about our favorite show for season four? I know we're still up in the air about how this season is going to end, but is there anything-- right now-- you think needs changing? Anything that they can do to make the show better than it is? How do you want to see the finale play out? Have you stopped caring about JAM? If so, how can they make you care again? Etc., etc. Or maybe you think everything is fine just the way it is. Hey, let us know that too. Post your comments below!

Let me lay down some facts... you decide where the writers are going with it... 1) Toby has had a crush on Pam for quite a while. 2) Pam hasn\'t noticed. 3) Toby is whiny and weak-willed. 4) Pam\'s weak-willedness is becoming more evident every episode... so much so that she comes across as whiny. Conclusion?.... It\'s all preparation for the Fleesly. (but probably not... hopefully not)

I think I\\\'m going to go Lynne\\\'s route and concentrate on what I love about this show. Forgive me while I gush-- Love the depth they\\\'ve given to Dwight. He could just be another weirdo creep like Creed, but the writers have given him a beet farm, an uptight bean-counting girlfriend, and a pseudo-Amish cousin named Mose (I actually met an Amish man named Mose at a funeral last month, totally reminded me of The Office--but that\\\'s another story). I also love how Pam and Michael understand each other on an eerie, deep level. She continually saves him from himself (ex: gives him a practice \\\"hello\\\" with callers before she puts the real call through to him), while he is unwittingly supportive and touching just when she needs it (art show). I also love how, deep down, I think Phyllis is a badass. She was the only woman to volunteer for basketball, the first one to volunteer for flunkerton in Office Olympics, and the only one with an Easy Rider reputation. All enclosed in that schoolmarm facade. Genius. Who wouldn\\\'t love this show? Is it Thursday yet?

What can I say, but a huge \\\"and...ditto\\\" to most of what you guys have already said? I think if they really want to break the Moonlighting curse, they should actually put Pam and Jim together. See what they\\\'re like as a couple in season four. Stop dragging their heels already. Karen needs to leave. Michael needs to be less Season 3 idiotic and go back to being Season 2 idiotic. I did agree with the Scrubs point. I would so not go to that hospital.

My only improvement for NBC and The Office would be to move it to a later time. I work and have kids - I don\'t watch TV before 9. I actually went out and got a DVR for this show, because I was running out of room on my laptop. Plot improvements: Just get going with JAM, Keep Dwangela sneaking around, and more in-office plots.

OK, I\'ve had a night to sleep on my reading of the article and my response to it. While I still agree with everything I wrote about the misogynistic \"writer\" of the article, in the end, the guy is nothing but a troll, plain and simple. Sorry if I offended anyone. I agree with you, Matt. The writers need to move on with Meredith. I\'ve known enough drunks in my life, and the whole thing rarely works out happily. Otherwise, I think the writers are going to get us to where we want to be with this show and I trust them. I just hope that NBC doesn\'t pull the plug on the show once they lose so much of their audience they\'ve built up with the Jim/Pam storyline.

Well, considering Burch advocated killing Tracy Morgan (the person, not the character) on live TV, I guess all the really extremist positions are taken. I don\\\\\\\'t quite advocate his \\\\\\\"solution\\\\\\\" for Pam\\\\\\\'s problems, but I certainly understand it (though I guess I\\\\\\\'m just a traditionalist in that the method of violence I was thinking of was the traditional movie-slap across the face). Snap out of it Pam! Changes to the show? End the love triangle and let Pam and Jim be together as a couple -- then go back to having the yucks in the office and not at bars or booze cruises or at conventions. Okay, a few outside shows are good but more \\\\\\\"office olympics\\\\\\\" or \\\\\\\"script reading\\\\\\\" shows, please. Other thoughts: * Time for Jan to get pregnant * Time for Karen to move to NYC * Time for Dwangela to out themselves And, of course.... more Todd Packer!

Wow, Pam must remind that guy of an ex-girlfriend or something. Some of Pam\'s wishy-washy behavior this year has been irritating, but I still find it realistic. I\'d like to see the show continue this year\'s trend of moving its emotional center, so to speak, away from the JAM storyline (which I think is still developing satisfactorily if slowly) by showing the humanity of some of the other characters, as it has done with Michael, Dwight, and even Angela (via her relationship with Dwight). I don\'t want it to turn into a drama or anything, but I would be impressed if they could show us what\'s lovable about about someone like Stanley, or Phyllis. I\'d even like to see them address Meredith\'s drinking problem -- I can see an episode about her going into rehab where Michael bungles the whole sensitivity thing in his usual way. But they should definitely keep Creed mysteriously weird and in small doses. Oh yeah, and more Flendersen, just to bug you guys :-)

Ahh...I want to look at the spoilers so bad, but I just can\'t bring myself to it. Even the episode titles might be spoilerish. And yes matt, we should never get a creed backstory. He should always be the weird old guy who smells like death and collects canadian welfare

I like to think of the episode \\\"Grief Counseling\\\" as a point in the whole series that marked a change of tone for the rest of the show. It seemed like the writers were almost ready to lose the Jim/Pam plotline all together. Jim looked like he would be staying in Stamford and Pam was going to fill the Jim role in the office while making fun of and being sympathetic towards michael. Jim was also looking like he would have a relationship with Karen that would have lasted the entire season and gone into the next. I was ready for that change and was a little disapointed when the merger came.

You know, I was just watching my S2 DVD\\\'s today. Specifically, I watched \\\"The Fire\\\" and \\\"Email Surveillance\\\", and Jim totally rocked the hangdog looks at Pam, while Pam just zipped up whenever Roy pissed her off. Those were good days. But these are good days, too. Pam is finding her voice, Jim still longs for Pam, albeit much more secretly. Yes, I want Jim and Pam to get together, but I wouldn\'t be watching the show if I only wanted that. I want the stuff that I can\'t bear to look at in my office, but is just so much funnier on TV. And that\'s the point. It\'s a TV show. Oh, and SHUT UP, Digg-guy-that-I\\\'m-not-even-going-to-reread-your-idiotic-article-to-quote-your-name-correctly. In plainer English, you suck.

i do think pam needs to grow a pair. she definately has improved but nonetheless. if you\\\'re in love w/ jim, the other woman shouldn\\\'t be a problem. in the long run, who gives a shit? karen is a bit of a wimp too though. jim obviously still has feelings for pam. he even admitted it! why would you stay w/ someone whose still in love w/ someone else? even jan\\\'s not as badass as she was last season. come to think of it, the only woman on the show who still has balls is kelly! that\\\'s not good. regardless no one should get kicked in the throat. that guy is just dumb. if you don\\\'t like the way the show is written then get a new show.

Well, I guess I\'m a misogynist too, cause I wouldn\'t mind slapping Pam, the FICTIONAL character, about now. I happen to have just just read this guy before coming over here. He\'s definitely over the top and I don\'t agree with a lot of what he say (Tracy Morgan rocks on 30 Rock!), but I am so sick of Pam\'s wimpy pussy footing that I would like to, let\'s say, gently but firmly shake her. It\'s funny how I know it\'s not \"Pam\'s\" fault; it\'s the freakin writers and the pressure they are under to extend this dance as long as possible, but one does end up actually being annoyed with a fake person, a fictional character.

Yikes ! I’m going to send Pam some pepper spray! There is thoughtful criticism and then there is just pure vitriol. Yes, the JAM story has been frustrating this season. For me it’s because I miss their friendship more than I need to see them hook-up. However, Pam’s struggle to find her voice provided at least 2 of my favorite moments of the season: Dwight trying to comfort her when she was crying in the hallway and Michael coming to her art show. My suggestion is simply BALANCE. The best episodes are the ones that don’t rely on one character’s absurd behavior for laughs. I don’t just mean Michael either, Dwight and Andy are better at 7-8 than amped up to 11. The talented supporting cast should be used more consistently. As an anti-rant here are some things I’ve liked about this season, trends that I hope continue. Dwight and Angela – sweet, strict, twisted, clandestine and passionate. I love these two. Creed – the use of this character especially in the past few eps. has been spot on. Just a couple of weird gems per episode. Kelly and Ryan’s banter – what could be grating if overused is hilarious in small doses. Jan walking the tightrope between arousal and nervous breakdown.
