So... This is the big Joss Whedon directed episode tonight, and it looks to have at least three different plot threads running through it. I can only imagine Ryan invited Michael to his class in order to mock him (or let Michael mock himself), and the Dwight Vs. The Bat thing... well, I hope it's funnier than it sounds. I am most interested in the Pam has an art show story-- I wanna know just how sexy that art is! NBC describes it thusly: BUSINESS SCHOOL
8:30/7:30c TV14 02.15.2007 MICHAEL GOES TO BUSINESS SCHOOL WITH RYAN - Ryan (B.J. Novak) invites Michael (Golden Globe winner Steve Carell) to be a guest speaker at his business school. Meanwhile, Dwight battles a bat that gets loose in the office while Pam (Jenna Fischer) invites co-workers to her first art show. Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Melora Hardin, Leslie David Baker, Brian Baumgartner, Kate Flannery, Angela Kinsey, Oscar Nunez, Phyllis Smith, Paul Lieberstein, and Mindy Kaling also star. Let the commenting begin! Oh, BTW-- JOIN IAN AND I IN THE TWSS CHATROOM AFTER THE SHOW (9:00e/8:00c). Not sure how many people can fit in the room, but we're willing to find out!

It is said: you could make an interesting episode out of an chat room\\\'s discussion. I see a lot of good Canadians here to make a perfect episode. I cannot wait to see if there will be any complains about this and that. Anyway, nothing a good Canadian drug cannot repair.

Overall, I liked the episode quite a bit. Creed was HILARIOUS and I echo the others who have expressed gratitude for at least a line or two from the supporting cast. I really wish at least the first deleted scene was in the episode. It thought it was quite nice and I absolutely LOVED Creed\\\'s \\\"I\\\'ll wait\\\" line. Ha ha! The second is pretty good too. (especially the first part) I was thinking about Pam\\\'s art show and wondering whether her mom went to it. I know she and her mom are close (she mentions this in season 2 when her mom comes to visit at the end -- blast, I just forgot the title of the episode) so it seems like she would have. Of course, maybe she did and they just didn\\\'t show it. Still, I don\\\'t paint (I make costumes for the Opera company here) but I know what it\\\'s like to invite people to a show and have no one show up. Whether you mean to or not, you can\\\'t not take it personally. Michael tossing candy bars into the audience and working their titles into his speech made me laugh hysterically. When I was in junior high and thought I was clever, (I know better now, of course) I used to make posters for people telling them they were such \\\"Sweetarts\\\" and worth \\\"100 Grand\\\" etc. Ha ha! I guess we know what level Michael is on. . . Lastly, (I promise!) despite my initial anger at Pam getting back with Roy, I\\\'m actually all for it now. This may sound really weird, but I was thinking about it and perhaps they\\\'ll both get really comfortable and we\\\'ll have a return of Old JAM banter, pranks, etc. not to mention the beautiful under current of chemistry. As Karen and Roy notice this is happening, they try harder and harder to tie Jim and Pam respectively to themselves and by doing so actually push them away and into each others arms. Oh sheesh. I should never have come up with that. Now, if it doesn\\\'t happen, I\\\'m going to be rather depressed. . .

First of all, hey from Seattle. I love your podcast guys! I\\\'ve listened to a few Office fan podcasts, and yours is by far the best! I\\\'m loving your insights, and you often say exactly what I\\\'m thinking about the episodes. Keep it up! I was really impressed with \\\"Business School.\\\" I really felt like it went back to the more classic episodes of seasons 1 and 2. The last couple of episodes have been so \\\"michael-heavy\\\". Don\\\'t get me wrong, I LOVE michael, but all the gay jokes in the wedding shower and the horrible, \\\"cringy\\\" (as you put it!) moments and things michael said at phyllis\\\'s wedding were a little much. You could argue that michael\\\'s speech at ryan\\\'s business school was over the top, but I really don\\\'t see it that way. I felt really bad for michael because it was obvious that he is just not willing to accept the fact that Dunder Mifflin WON\\\'T be around forever, and this little coccoon he has created for himself of his office, his employees...the sebring, are not going to be around forever. It was sad, but at the same time it was endearing because not very many people have that kind of passion and commitment for what they do. Just like in the episode \\\"Branch Closing,\\\" like you said, michael never once says anything like \\\"this sucks for ME. I\\\'M going to lose MY job.\\\" All Michael cares about is his employees, and he really sees himself as a hero to them. As for the bat/vampire plot line, I have one word, two syllables. FREAKIN AWESOME. I love that Joss Whedon was able to sort of make fun of his past directing experience and bring a fresh point of veiw to the office. This was a little out there, but I think it really worked. I LOVE creed and I think most of his scenes are just genius. I especially loved when dwight asks him to form an allegence (not to be confused with ALLIANCE) and creed is just like \\\"yes. what size wooden steak?\\\" I hope they make creed a more regulor accomplice to Dwight\\\'s shenanigans. I do agree with you that its not as funny when Jim pranks Dwight unless Dwight\\\'s really asking for it. In this case however, I think Jim\\\'s prank was pretty harmless. I laughed so hard when Jim got \\\"burned\\\" by the cold garlic bread and Dwight says \\\"one crisis at a time, one crisis at a time.\\\" Hillarious! I was sort of relieved to not see any JAM filler. Although I would have liked to see Jim show up at Pam\\\'s art show, did they explain why he didn\\\'t go? Did she even invite him? I thought Roy showing up with his brother and then making that comment \\\"Hey, I show up with my brother and no one from the office is even here?\\\" was weird, and could be taken a couple of different ways. Either he\\\'s saying \\\"look how great I am! I even brought my brother I\\\'m so supportive and look no one else is here, i\\\'m the best.\\\" OR \\\"what? no one from the office is here to see me show off that i\\\'m back with pam?\\\" but his line about her art being the prettiest art of all the art was priceless, I think that was the best line of the whole episode. Okay, sorry to write so much! I just LOVE The Office and I can\\\'t wait to hear your podcast! I love you guys keep it up!!

Such a great episode to bring \'The Office\' back from last week\'s drama. The bat story line was amazing. It felt so orginal and Jim\'s transformation was so incredibly fun to watch. I really liked seeing Karen finally get in on one of the pranks. \"But Jim, this garlic bread is cold!\" She could defiantly give Pam a run for her money as Jim\'s accomplice. And Micheal\'s speech was both hilarous ((The guy\'s face when he\'s hit by the candy bar get\'s me everytime.)) and sadning. And the return of some Ryan man-crush action was a nice plus. ;) And the lack of Jam was a nice relief. If every week was like \'Phyllis\' Wedding\' then The Office just wouldn\'t be \'The Office\'. I\'m defiantly not saying their relationship isn\'t still as engaging as it was last season because I still really enjoy how their story unfolds every week. But you don\'t need a massive wave a drama each episode. They\'re an important part of the show, but the show shouldn\'t revolve around them. Plus it gave some of the other minor charactors some time for a few amazing moments of televistion. ((Meredith FTW!))
-
I\'ve been rewatching the whole series, and I remembered why it\'s so significant that Roy brings his brother to the art show: Pam\'s first date story! He brought his brother on their first date, and they left her at the hockey arena. Sorry if someone\'s already mentioned this.
-
So I keep thinking about how Michael was going to work \"Chunky\" into his speech :) At least he sort of gave them a lesson on product placement and brand recognition. It was nice to see an episode where nearly every character had a line/moment. Loved Angela\'s stop, drop and roll. I agree the Jim/Karen stuff seemed forced, they didn\'t need to sell it that hard. Dwight\'s imagination will run wild on its own with minimal prodding. If Jim showed up to the art show he\'d just be in for another 5 hour talk. Leaving him out of it spotlights the fact that Pam needs to be honest with herself (especially about Roy) and have the courage to stand on her own. Admitedly it has been a rough road for her thus far, she can\'t even wear less bland clothes without Creed creeping her out. Pam took a step forward by just allowing other people to view her art, sexy or not she put it out there. Thank goodness at least Michael gave her some sincere encouragement, that was truly a great selfless moment for him. Pam said herself she hasn\'t had her \"breakthrough\" as an artist yet and plainly she is already realizing that returning to Roy was not a good move. She knows she needs to change and that critique of her art should be a wake-up call for her life if she\'s paying attention. Spot-on snarkiness from Gil, let\'s hope she takes the truth of it to heart. Ah Ryan, isn\'t Karma dawesome:) Michael probably thinks being bannished to the annex with Toby is the real punishment. Wonder if Ryan will take up dunderball? Just imagine the vortex of angst that will be created if Andy takes his desk between Jim and Dwight.
-
I really liked this one. Such a relief after last week. About Ryan, though -- Matt, just because you\'re marking time, so to speak, doesn\'t mean you have to be a prick. Also, I think it\'s somewhat of a misreading to call him ambitious. Yeah, he\'s going to business school. But he\'s so arrogant and self-loathing (I think) that he\'s unable to learn from people around him. He\'s so busy looking down on them that he usually misses the fact that they have abilities that he\'s sorely lacking. He\'s not going to move onto greener pastures if he\'s unable to see that. Melissa, I too really wish John the props guy was still the props guy writing his blog. I\'m a painter and I was really curious to hear the behind the scenes stuff on Pam\'s art. Speaking of Pam\'s work, I have to say this in defense of it: While I wouldn\'t exactly use the word \"courageous\" about it, nor would I say it was \"dishonest.\" In fact, two other students\' work that they flashed were pretty blatantly \"reminiscent\" of certain famous artists -- the second person was very Keith Haringesque; the third, a fuzzy Georgia O\'Keefe rip-off. The first person was making fantasy art -- nothing wrong with that, but it would normally be shot down in a \"serious\" art class unless it was somehow going beyond the illustrational. Our Pam\'s work was an unlikely combination of highly skilled, if uninspired, architectural illustration (the two of buildings), and somewhat awkward and amateurish, but earnest still lifes. In real life, the person who was able to do such skilled work with the buildings, would probably have been able to pull off the still lifes with more success -- part of why I am so curious to hear what went into the decisions about what to use for Pam\'s work. But, anyway, if I were choosing, I\'d see more potential in Pam\'s tentative but earnestly searching work than I would in the people who already thought they knew what they were doing. Yes, I realize that this is most likely of little interest to anyone but me, but I found it fascinating how they chose to portray Pam\'s work, and that they\'d have Gil call it \"motel art.\"

YOU AGREE WITH ME??? does that mean I might get mentioned this week? Hahah --- I\\\'ve been a listener from the start and all... Weighing in on the \\\"Who is Ryan?\\\" thing...yes, he WAS a temp - but he\\\'s not anymore. I wouldn\\\'t say there is anything TEMP about him...I mean, he\\\'s dating someone in the office, been there for \\\"three years\\\" and yes he might go on to bigger and better, but he\\\'s learning too - I just wish he would have some respect for people - I mean Dwight taught him stuff - he admitted to that, he\\\'s been there long enough to know that Michael is actually a good salesman too... I just think it was lame of him to be like \\\"why wouldn\\\'t I bring michael? i need a letter grade.\\\" I don\\\'t know Jim & Ryan are both @$$holes (sorry that\\\'s the \\\"bleep\\\" button on here) I am growing increasingly dismayed with both of them. I am wary of a show that shows them as such jerks. Dwight is endearing at least - say what you want about him, but he grows on you. Jim & Ryan are just getting \\\'old.\\\'
-
I totally agree with you guys about Jim seeming very 2D lately. Matt, initially I didn\'t share your frustration with Jim, but over the course of the last 2 or 3 episodes, I\'m starting to feel the same way. I wonder if, after Pam gets over feeling hurt about Oscar and Gil\'s comments, it will inspire her to be more \"honest and courageous\" and not just with her art. The fling with Roy is not going last long! To me, Michael\'s moment with Pam at the art show was probably second only to his talk with Jim on the Booze Cruise episode. Loved it!
-
Something else that strikes me: Michael is passionate about the people he works with and who works under them and who supports him. He loves what he does. This is almost antithetical to everyone else in this business. Everyone else in the Office is not as passionate with their work or the people at work. You can see it. Ryan is the most ideal choice for illustrating this point. He is a tease on Kelly without actually rejecting her. Ryan is what Jim would\\\'ve been if Jim didn\\\'t find Pam in the office. Jim cares about Pam (and Karen), so he learns to see those that he works with as people and not as \\\"business.\\\" Without Jim finding Pam, he would\\\'ve been as cold as Ryan.

I loved this episode. I just felt it hit every right note. Had the best & worst of Michael Scott especially. Was anyone else tearing up at the end of this episode??? Seriously the whole Pam art show thing was just so sad. And Oscar and Steve (?his parter?) basically summing up Pams personality? So sad :( And I loved loved loved the last bit with Ryan & Kelly \\\"ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod\\\" PRICELESS! I have to say though - I think Roy is trying, he\\\'s kind of a jerk, but he\\\'s trying TOO hard, that\\\'s the problem. If he had just shown up and been there it would\\\'ve been better. And who can blame him for trying to get it on with Pam? I mean, common - she\\\'s foxy. I loved the bat stuff... soo good... but does anyone else think that Jim is just --- kind of 2D in the past few episodes? Just sorta there - not really doing ANYTHING? I donno - I mean, he pranks and stuff, but he\\\'s just become such a boring sort of character, like not even trying... I donno - just an observation :) Besides that, I loved this episode!
-
I attended a speech where the guy threw out candy bars like Michael did. Just as corny, except the people were killing each other over a snickers bar. I\'m sure the fact that the well known \"speakers tip\" failed with this audience didn\'t help Michael\'s mood. Suck on it! Aw, give Karen a break. The girl is desperate to keep Jim. I want to know what Meredith said. Please don\'t make me wait until August to watch it on the season 3 dvd!
-
did the chatroom discuss why jim didn\'t go to pam\'s show? the first deleted scene makes me wonder if somehow, Karen was able to get him through the day without finding out about it? And do we really need to know the exact words of Meredith\'s joke? it was clearly some sort of \"big man on campus\" reference.
-
I think this is the best light we\\\'ve seen Michael in weeks. After all the strangeness of his meeting with students, I love that he shows such love towards his business. Business is people. I love that axiom. Even Michael putting Ryan back to work with Kelly shows that he\\\'s thinking of his business as something that has people in it. Ryan doesn\\\'t understand people. That\\\'s problematic to Michael. It makes sense that he puts him by Kelly...not because he hates Ryan, but he wants Ryan to understand that he has to deal with people. Another quote I like is, \\\"A good manager doesn\\\'t fire people, he hires people...he inspires people. People, Ryan...and people will never go out of business.\\\" He places Ryan with Kelly. Ryan has to deal with Kelly and learn how to deal with people. I can see Michael doing this to get Ryan to understand how to deal with people in a business...to make him a stronger businessman. The ending really touches me. I love that he loves Pam\\\'s work on the building, showing that the artwork is created on paper. It emphasizes his love of the paper business, and his love for the employees that understand his love for the business.
-
I have to say I was a little disapointed with this episode. I think that it was a copout to have the joss whedon episode involve vampires rather than a tribute. The next episode sounds like it will make up for last nights though: AKING IT OFFICIAL - Michael (Golden Globe winner Steve Carell) and Jan (Melora Hardin) go public with their relationship during a party at their CFO\'s home. At the party, Jim (John Krasinski) meets Karen\'s (Rashida Jones) ex. Meanwhile, the rest of the office decides to go to happy hour for drinks. Sounds Awesome!
-
I was practically peeing myself laughing over the whole bat in the office bit! I think we have a new term for crazy hilarious episodes: pee-worthy. Maybe not. :-) Anyway, I thought this was a great episode. Even little things, like Angela wearing that rain bonnet, had me cracking up! Or Michael throwing candy bars and the way people not only didn\'t try to catch them but didn\'t even try to deflect them as they got hit. Pam at the art show was just so sad!! I was really expecting Jim to show up at the last second for a nice warm and fuzzy ending. It felt so weird and empty that he didn\'t. At least Michael was able to offer some comfort, albeit in his inept Michael-ish way. And I have to say I really really really hate that Pam is back w/ Roy. Not just b/c she belongs w/ Jim (obviously) but because it\'s so obvious she doesn\'t even want to be w/ Roy, ie she didn\'t want to go to his place after the show. It seems she just doesn\'t want to be alone. Come on Pam, it\'s ok to be single!!!
-
First post! :) I, too, thought the Meredith bat scene was pretty funny (I did \\\"LOL\\\") but I kept thinking, \\\"OMG, her face is going to be scarred!!\\\" And, I cried at the end with Michael and Pam. That was really a sweet and touching moment. I felt bad for Pam when Oscar\\\'s boyfriend called it hotel-room art. It was pretty funny how Michael knew how to punish Ryan (tee hee)
-
Thursday Kevin says this was one of the funniest episodes ever - even if it was completely ridiculous. Dwight totally deserved the pranks - and nice to see Karen getting into the act with Jim!! Ryan deserves his fate - Michael sent him to purgatory!! And he makes room for Andy to sit with Jim and Dwight. Nice Oscar cameo - pivotal to the plot for once, too. Can we give Steve Carell an Emmy already? He was so in the zone in this episode! Unlike Phyllis\\\' wedding his speech wasn\\\'t completely ridiculous (for the person that Michael Scott is supposed to be). And the scene in the gallery was truly touching -- then a screeching halt when Pam asked if he had something in his pants! Classic Office! The bat thing was actually pretty realistic (other than Dwight\\\'s belief in vampires). And very funny. I want Creed on my side when the throw-down comes. This is the beginning of the end for Roy. Sorry, buddy, you\\\'re over your head.
-
Last night\'s episode was great! Big improvement upon the last two and it was the absolutely perfect episode for Joss Whedon. I swear the man must have had his pick. I love Jim\'s prank on Dwight i was LOLing every time he said something to Dwight going through the \"change\". I felt so bad for Meredith. Yay for her getting some screen time, just too bad it was in a plastic bag. Creed is so AWESOME! \"What size?\" Classic! This episode also made me dislike Ryan quite a bit! He was just asking to get in trouble setting up Michael like that. I don\'t know what his character would have otherwise expected from Michael Scott. Hopefully he\'ll learn the lesson of the importance of customer service by being sent to the Annex. And can i say i HATE Karen. She\'s trying to take the place of Pam, and its totally not happening. Karen (not Rashida) can\'t \"act\" aka pull a good prank at all. Also does anyone else think that maybe Karen has asked Jim to kind of stay away from Pam? In Ben Franklin there was that awkward conversation between Jim and Pam, and i just felt like maybe Jim was in a hurry to get away from her before he got in trouble with Karen. He didn\'t even show up to Pam\'s art show. Way to NOT support local art! Jim get a pair! Also my heart broke for Pam at the art show. No one really coming to see her art... It seemed like no one liked it either, until Michael pulled the other kind of a Michael Scott where he someone goes right to the root of it all and says just what that person needs to hear at that exact moment. That got to me! I wish John the props guy was still doing a blog. I would bet money that Pam\'s art was very purposely painted in washed out water colors, compared to the other paintings in the gallery in vibrant bright acrylics, to make it seem more drab. I can\\\'t wait to hear your guy\\\'s take on this episode!
-
I agree Ian, back to The Office I love so much! My favorite was the Pam plot, so glad they brought the flaws out in Roy again. He may be a nice guy for some girl but not for Pam. The art show was heartbreaking, and I was really glad they didn\'t ruin it by having Michael have something in his pocket besides a candy bar. LOVED Angela in this one. Jim was funny but I feel mad at him for not going to the art show, even if I do understand why. Dwight was back to the Dwight I love. Last word: That\'s what you get for being a butthole Ryan.
-
The bag scene w/ meredith was one of the most funny yet horrifying things I\'ve ever seen. If it was me I\'d be traumatized for life. They should have meredith become like Batman! Overall just a great episode. I like having these guest directors, the episodes turn out pretty good. It\'s seems like because they are fans too, they know what we want to see.
-
\\\"Not sure how many people can fit in the room, but we\\\'re willing to find out!\\\" That\\\'s what she said. Or he said. Based on the Yahoo preview clips, the bat thing looks slightly funnier than it sounds. Dwight might be back into \\\"deserving a prank\\\" territory.
-
You know, it\\\'s funny how pleased you can be by an episode when you\\\'re not expecting much. When I heard the premise for tonight\\\'s show, I thought there would be a few good laughs, but no real substance. When I heard Joss Whedon was directing, I questioned whether or not his style would work with the show. I was pleasantly surprised indeed! Best episode since the director\\\'s cut of \\\"Branch Closing.\\\" Dwight was at his best trying to capture the bat, while Michael was at his worst and best this episode. I felt the kid\\\'s pain when Michael tore the pages out of his book. I also felt Pam\\\'s pain at her art show, which was when Michael was at his best. He genuinely cares for his workers, even if he does a terrible job of showing it sometimes. Jim not showing up at the art show? Not a surprise. He\\\'s keeping his distance, believing she is happy to be with Roy. However, the old kinks in the armor are beginning to show. Roy simply does not know what to say to Pam to support her when she needs it. Praise the art, damn it! They are simply not compatible enough to last long, to have a happy life together. Still, this felt like The Office I learned to love. Whedon delivered, and so did Kevin. \\\"I\\\'m a hero.\\\" Booyah!
