Episode # 16 of THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID finds both Matt and Ian exhausted after trying to sneak through Dwight's security cordon... man, the things we do for free booze! It's wedding season, you sand-bagging SOBs, but Phyllis forgot rule #98-- hell hath no fury like a Michael scorned! She got her 6 weeks, but will she live to regret asking Michael to be in the wedding party? Will Dwight catch any of those nasty wedding crashers? Will Toby finally get lucky? Will Ryan survive the bouquet toss? will Jim, for the love of god and all things holy on this great green earth find the cojones to tell Pam how he feels? Or not? And who says it's bad to backslide? Great podcast again. I had to deny myself from listening to it for 2 days. We were snowed in my work was called off but I wanted to wait and listen to it once I got back to make the day go a little faster. Crazy. I know you wonder if people think you are being too negative or whatever. I think you just love The Office and want it to be the best it can be. Nothing wrong with that. I\'m thrilled you don\'t gush about every little thing no matter if it\'s good or not. That said I myself am going to try to relax a bit. I need to just sit back and enjoy sometimes. It might help if I stop reading so many spoilers and watching previews. As for the episode, I think it is my least favorite ever. This or the Convict (which breaks my heart because I love Ricky Gervais so much.)

Great show guys, but Please, please, Please!, use The Levelator by Gigavox on your paudcast. (I spell it that way to protest apple\'s DRM) It\'s free and will make the volume all at one level so we can easily hear the quiet stuff, and aren\'t blown away by the loud.Again, great show.

Speaking of \\\"Summer\\\" incidents... we still haven\\\'t heard wether or not JIM ever went on his trip to Australia he was supposed to go on last Summer. Why no mention of it at all? According to Paul (Everyone\\\'s Favorite Sad Sack Toby Flenderson) via givememyremote.com Jim DID NOT go to Australia. Unless they find some way to work it into a show.

Hey guys, as always, fabulous podcast! You do have a very convincing way of luring me to the dark side of the Pam/Jim issue though. . . ;) (i.e. wondering whether I\'ll actually be excited or just relieved when they finally hook up.) I agree with you both that the Oscar cut scenes should have been in the episode. They would have helped even out the kookyness that is Michael and made the episode much more laugh out loudable. And more Creed is never I bad thing, I find. Umm, hmm. It seems I had much more to say, but I can\'t remember. I guess I\'ll just have to listen to the \'Cast again!

On Pranks, I think that there is (of course) a connection between pranking and flirting with Pam, but MORE than that... I think Jim realized late last season that there was a choice for him to make: pranks or success. After the conflict resolution, he finally decides to pursue success instead of mediocrity and pranking. When he returns to Scranton, he realizes that he probably shouldn\'t backslide from his newfound success into the mediocrity, but is able to find balance between success and pranking. As a theory, I think that\'s fairly strong... here\'s where it gets sketchy... This dichotomy is of course another parallelism in the show. As Jim has to choose between business success and mediocrity, the two women in his life symbolize these choices as well. Pam has long been portrayed as unambitious, while Karen is the business-minded, suit-wearing go-getter. YET, look at where the sparks are relationally. At best, the romance between Jim and Karen has been mediocre... while Jim and Karen moments have been quite the opposite. Enough gibberbabblish. What would we do with an episode where Dwight, Jim, and Mike where gone... somewhere, and maybe Pam is at her mom\'s. At any rate... what would that episode look like?

Matt -- As someone who really doesn\\\'t care for pranks even when they\\\'re \\\"deserved\\\", I feel the same way you do as far as them being less funny now that they\\\'ve humanized Dwight more. And I agree that they are becoming tiresome. I also found it satisfying in Conflict Resolution when Jim seemed to at once realize that maybe all the pranks are not so funny and that maybe it\\\'s a little pathetic for him to be thriving off them as much as does. I\\\'m not as disappointed as you are that he seems to have regressed, but I would love to see him re-realize that he\\\'s better than that. Though, I imagine that as far as the writers think about this kind of thing, his resumption of pranking is linked to his romantic conflict and dissatisfaction. I know that might seem to contradict the fact that in the \\\"old days\\\" he often pranked Dwight WITH Pam. Somehow, though, I think that if they were finally uninhibitedly honest with each other, and finally did get together, that the love would spread, so to speak. The need to sort of take out pent up resentment and frustration (about everything) on Dwight would dissipate. Hm. That sounds awfully psychobabblish. But I\\\'ll go with it anyway.

Elisa -- That lute playing douchebag might get $200 of my hard-earned cash in a few weeks, so who\\\'s getting the last laugh in that situation? I\\\'d hate to see everyone \\\"hooking up\\\" at Dunder-Mifflin too, though one of my favorite running jokes about \\\'ER\\\' over the years was that Dr. Carter diddled everyone with a vi-jay-jay at Cook County General. Mathercize -- I\\\'m totally on board with that theory. Phyllis was a wild child in her youth. I know it.

LOVE the podcast! I think I listened to your entire library in a matter of 3 days or so. You guys ROCK. And the comments here are priceless. Anyway, I just happened to be reading a recent US Weekly issue at the *ahem* dentist\'s office and there was a blurb that Jim (John Krasinski) was actually dating Karen (Rashida Jones) in real life. This was the issue with Reese Witherspoon, et al on the cover. Have you heard this? Is it true??
-
I think all of Jim\'s pranks are totally justified. even if we don\'t see it, I am sure Dwight is being the total asshat day after day. I have worked with people who are 50% of the weirdness of Dwight and would have loved to had the capability to prank them all the time. Also isn\'t that the nature of the prank, you pull it long after you yourself have been tortured so that the prankee doesn\'t associate it with whatever he did to you.
-
I just want to see one episode that takes Michael, Jim, and Pam out of the office and just lets us see the dynamics between the supporting characters for 22 minutes. Something a little fresh, like what we got a taste of with the \"Accountants\" microseries over last Summer.

finally got to hear the podcast, campus was closed due to snow. ian, i was laughing my ass off when you called sting a \"lute playing douche bag\"! LOL!! honestly, i always enjoy jim\'s pranks. 95% of the time, i think they are hilarious. i\'m glad i\'m not the only one who thought it was stupid that jim didn\'t just say \"pavlov\". that did bug me. dwight didn\'t necessarily do anything to warrant that prank but, he still acts like an a-hole. jim \"innocently\" offers him an altoid, and in typical dwight fashion, he mimics jim like a 5 year old...and then holds his hand out. LOL glad to hear you guys can finally admit that toby might have some game! i\'m so jealous of his date/hooker... i think jim was sooo fake when he was watching karen on the stage. it seemed so forced to me. i have no doubt that he genuinely likes karen, who wouldn\'t, but it\'s obvious by his reaction to pam and roy leaving together, he was just as crushed as on \"booze cruise\". yes, angela and dwight have sex...as disturbing as that may be. it\'s been implied so many times during the past 2 seasons. i\'m with ian, if they start doing spin off shows, a la \"joey\", i might have to gouge my eyes out. as for the whole jim/pam debate. i\'m JAM all the way, but...i\'ve recently come to terms with the fact that i\'m starting to get annoyed with the amount of focus their storyline gets. the great thing about \"the office\" was the subtlety of jim/pam\'s attraction to each other. i would love to see them get together, but, i\'m afraid they\'re just going to beat this horse to death. things between them can never go back to the way they were but i think the writers need to pull back. i think the writers are sabotaging the whole jam thing out of frustration that we, the audience, seem to only talk about that. we do appreciate the other storylines and characters, that\'s what makes the show so compelling to watch. i\'m glad they didn\'t do anything with the toby/pam storyline because that would be so typical of other shows (ahem...friends/ER) where everyone who works together or are friends sleep with one another or are on-again, off-again. so, is JAM over? no. is the JAM storyline becoming a train wreck? yes. i still LOVE the show but i know now not to get my hopes up for anything and try to just sit back and enjoy the ride. oh, and \"take your daughters to work day\" was one of my fave episodes last season. how could you not think edward r. meow was not pee-your-pants-like-michael-scott funny? :)

I expected a mention of this in the podcast, but team Karen or not... I think you\\\'ve got to say that she was pretty cute singing and hopping around the stage (well put, kevin crossman). CONSPIRACY THEORY:::: \\\"Easy Rider\\\" Back in High School, Phyllis was a hottie. She was popular and all that. She was nice, but had a crazy streak that she hid from teachers. On top of it all, Michael had a crush on her, which is why he started working at Dunder Mifflin in the first place. Here\\\'s what the theory explains: - Phyllis\\\' crazy antics and \\\"big personality\\\" (dancing in \\\'The Fire\\\' and one of the Christmas episodes, her maraca-shaking at the Mexican party, etc) - It completes a whole Oedipus complex thing that Michael has that he\\\'s transferred from his mother to Phyllis. He\\\'s always saying she\\\'s old and has a disdain for the husband (Jeff and Bob). Plus the whole Sexual Harassment \\\'boner\\\' comment. - It would be some potential for some funny flashback comedy. Holes in the Theory: - Plausibility (not an issue for sitcoms) There you have it, \\\"Easy Rider\\\" expained in a nice little package containing no holes whatsoever....

Hayden -- If Uncle Al insists on reminiscing about the Celtics 1980s glory, you will almost certainly get a Detroit Pistons rebuttal from me on the podcast. (2007, however, is the 20-year anniversary of one of the most painful trangressions the Celtics perpetrated on my Pistons. Ergh.) 1988 NBA Eastern Conference Finals, baby! (I know... no one cares.)
-
Kevin -- I think I\\\'m leaning toward your side on the Jim-Pam-Karen triangle. I know most won\\\'t agree with this, but you could argue that Pam has totally let Jim off the hook now, and can give his full attention to Karen. You could also say that Jim\\\'s look as Pam walked off with Roy was as much about disappointment over Pam being with the wrong guy (regardless of whether or not it\\\'s Jim). Of course, we won\\\'t really know until we see how this unfolds.
-
great podcast guys did anyone think it was hilarious when phyllis said you found uncle al!..them micheal said ..yeah hes kind of a weirdo. I lol\'d at that. hopefully they resolve the jim pam thing this season and they get together. Matt, didn\'t you say last podcast that pam goes on a date with one of ryan\'s business school friends later this season?..if so then the RAM thing must not last too long
-
Great podcast! In answer to your questions of motivation of the characters, I give you this: Pam leaves with Roy, Jim pranks Dwight, Phyllis steals Pam\' wedding plans - why? Ultimately they are all people who don\'t want to try hard in life, don\'t want to work towards their real potential, don\'t want to take risks. They all stay at jobs they don\'t particularly care for because it is safe. It is the same reason Pam leaves with Roy, he represents the comfort and safety of what she knows instead of risking the unknown. As the awesome band TAI sang \"go work in retail, spare the suspense just don\'t take chances, anything at all so afraid of anything that may not come that easy so afraid of anything you may not of seen before just don\'t take chances.\" And, who know\'s maybe Jim\'s boredom isn\'t the only reason he pranks Dwight, maybe Jim isn\'t the \"nice guy\" he appears to be?
-
This episode was on my birthday and I think is was an OK present. Good ole Creed w/ his sly tricks. I do have a suggestion as to who will replace Phyllis while she\\\'s on her honeymoon. Uncle Al. Can\\\'t wait to hear more of the glory days of the Celtics. Great episode guys.

I think it\'s so strange how the same joke can hit people so differently and no amount of \"explaining\" why something was funny is likely to change anyone\'s mind. I\'m with Matt on the \"Vance Refrigeration\" in the vows thing. Seemed forced and too broad to me. Also agree about Jim not saying Pavlov; it just sounded dumb. And, YES, the cutting-room-floor Oscar stuff WAS better than much of what was left in, particularly the endless Michael horror. I do agree that it made (sad) sense for Pam to go off with Roy; I\'m not among the furious on that one. But I do think you\'re putting a little too much of the blame on Jim, even though of course it\'s maddening and a little pathetic to see him faking it with Karen. But it IS Pam\'s \"turn\" to be the one who finally says SOMETHING. And Jim did seem to be giving her an opening with the flirting about her dancing. Oh, I don\'t know. Those crazy kids . . . But, yeah, Nick, I don\'t think I\'m obsessed with Jim and Pam, but I\'m definitely invested in their saga. And I don\'t think I\'m mistaking The Office for a soap or a sappy romantic comedy. But neither is it Seinfeld; we DO care about what happens to the characters. (Note: not that there\'s anything wrong with Seinfeld. [Heehee.] To the contrary: Seinfeld was -- is -- brilliant. But I don\'t recall my heart ever aching for Jerry, George, Elaine or Kramer.)
-
Totally Phyliss\\\'s perfume being the rank smell. I have to admit I may have shed a brief tear when Pam was watching Jim dance with Karen. But more than anything, I miss the banter between them. They need to just try it out, get it over with, and we can move on with more fun banter. And I can\\\'t believe the missed opportunities to show Meredith trashed at a co-worker\\\'s wedding reception. Those ALWAYS make the best day-after stories at the office.

***SALE ALERT****2nd Season!! Hey, I don\'t know if anyone has mentioned this anywhere but, Borders is selling the 2nd season of \"The Office\" for just $19.99 until tomorrow 2/14. I picked one up along with the 2nd season of \"House\"...also just $19.99! There a bunch more titles of TV show boxed sets for the same price. Great Deal considering they usually cost 40 or 50 bucks.
-
I disagree that Jim isn\'t happy with Karen. He sees Pam leaving but then Karen is the life of the party by dancing and singing -- what Jim told Pam he wanted to see. Karen is fun and Jim wants to have fun. You guys need to lay off Jim -- this entire season is all on Pam, not him. Jim is trying to do the right thing and move on - he ALREADY made his move and Pam rejected him!

On your show you said that people were going to get tired of the \"will they?/won\'t they?\" issue, but I dont think that that\'s true. I think that if people are watching the show as a soap or a romantic comedy type of show, then maybe they will be dissapointed, but if the show stays the same, (an office comedy with a potential couple whose characters act like real people and not soap stars), then the \"will they/wont they?\" issue shouldnt be a problem. Think about it, when/if you were in a potential office romance like that, it would probably go on and on for years. In the real world neither of the two would ever say anything to one another about their feelings. The relationship would be full of awkward/funny moments, a little jealousy, and the two would probably find relationships outside the workplace, which is probably better for job security anyway (Jim\'s the boss right?). Plus, if the two did get together and it didnt work out (which it wouldnt), then the show becomes something else entirely. Some kind of soap/romance show which is not what the show is about. It\'s about comedy, and it seems they are getting back on track by sliding jim and pam to the back burner and letting the comedy shine through. If you are looking for a \"will they?/wont they?\" romance, go rent sleepless in seattle, this is a comedy and hopefully it will stay one.
-
I think Cheers serves as a good template for \"office romance.\" Season 1: will they or won\'t they? Season 2: They\'re together Season 3: bitter breakup Season 4: detente Season 5: Coming back together. It would be nice if Karen transferred to another branch so she could be brought back in the \"Frasier\" role. BTW - which branch does Todd Packer work for? I\'m sure he\'d be happy to have Karen in his neighborhood. Especially when she needs a shoulder to cry on after Jim dumps her.

Loved the podcast, as usual. I kept on thinking about Jim\\\'s pranks on Dwight and I have to disagree that it is Jim being cruel towards Dwight. Consider what he actually does at the wedding: he slips in the idea that there should be someone who keeps out wedding crashers. He never tells Dwight to be the bouncer. It is always Dwight who takes the initiative to be completely insane and take it to the next level. The Ben Franklin bit last week didn\\\'t make any sense, but anything that Dwight does by his own volition in the latest episode shouldn\\\'t be held against Jim.
-
I have to confess, I missed out on about 10 minutes of the podcast, because I kept thinking about the spin-off show \\\"The Schrutes.\\\" I keep hearing Phil Hartman (as Troy McClure) say \\\"And maybe their old friends Jim and Pam will stop by to wish them luck!\\\" You know what? I miss Andy. Even pre Traveling Salesman, he deserved a healthy amount of pranks. Bring back Andy and let Jim prank him for awhile. (But then again, I didn\\\'t think the cell phone prank was that great. I liked it for it\\\'s Pam-Jim Jammieness, but if Jim tried that on Dwight, even he would think it was lame.)
