Episode # 18 of THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID finds both Matt and Ian wondering
just how many shots it takes to prevent us from collapsing in on ourselves like dying stars. Michael's all a twitter when Jan asks him to sign a "love contract" before their "coming out party," but does Jan truly want what Michael's selling? Slam you against Where? Remember-- "no" means "please don't!" Will Dwight find any termite damage in the crawlspace? Will Jim sink the trey? Will Karen battle Phyllis for the title of "easy rider"? will fancy new Pammy Beesly show the world who's boss? And please, seriously, won't someone think about the Jet Skiis?? Sorry to hear you\\\'re sick again, Matt -- there sure are a lot of nasty bugs going around this year :-( I personally have suffered through the first and second bouts of strep throat in my entire 36 years this past month -- that\\\'s what I get for spending time at my kids\\\' school! I hope you feel better soon :-)

aww, crap. ian beat me to the \"twss\"! lol! melonie--i\'m totally with you with the \"useless knowledge\" thing! even when i was really little, i used to memorize dialogue from movies after seeing it once. my brother and i would (and still do!) recite dialogue from movies and annoy the crap outta people. when my bro and sis-in-law finally have kids, i intend to pass down this tradition of banality to my nieces and nephews! ha!

I got something like 80/300 on that quote game at NBC.com and was seriously annoyed at the number of times I basically had it but was off by a spelling or something. I totally agree it should have been multiple choice, and you should have been able to see the right answer no matter what. I mean, geez -- don\'t they want us to learn anything? ;-) Of course, the reason I was even close to getting most of them was that I\'ve been listening to all the TWSS podcasts one after the other since I discovered you guys a few weeks ago (what took me so long?). I think I only have a couple left to get me through till there\'s a new episode and (hopefully soonafter) podcast. I don\'t actually know when that\'s going to be -- although I figured it out one time, I\'m proud to say my \"Office\" mania does stop short of actually writing \"new episode of The Office\" on my calendar...

\\\"I do think that some people just have a memory for that kind of thing and other people (me) don\\\'t.\\\" I have often been told that if I put as much effort into memorizing things that are worthwhile as I do memorizing movie/t.v. quotes, I\\\'d be the most brilliant person alive. What these people don\\\'t realize is that I don\\\'t MEAN to memorize them, it just happens. My brain is a sponge for useless knowledge -- everything else slips right on through. . . :) Matt and Ian, I just finished listening. My how I\\\'ve missed your sultry voices! ;) Honestly, though, I enjoyed it quite a bit and thanks for the extra length. I\\\'m so curious how they\\\'re going to end this season, especially now that we know they\\\'re signed on for another season. I personally think the writers could do some interesting things with Jim and Pam actually together, but I\\\'ve lost all faith that it\\\'ll actually happen. Also, I agree that I\\\'m a bit weary of the \\\"party\\\" episodes. I miss the episodes that centered around the drudgery of every day life in the office. \\\"Office Olympics\\\" for example.

I\\\'m sure this will surprise no one, but I was TERRIBLE at that quote game. However, I feel I should\\\'ve earned points on some answers by being close enough. (That\\\'s essentially my life motto.) I did indeed have a \\\'Deadwood\\\' blog, but we ran out of steam when it seemed like only five people or so (including me and Mis Hooz) were reading. Maybe we\\\'ll bring it back if and when HBO does those \\\'Deadwood\\\' movies. I certainly miss typing out that much profane language. \\\'300\\\' was awesome. Movie theaters should have a room where people can swing swords and chop off heads after the movie, so they don\\\'t get in their cars with all that energy and bloodthirst. And Melonie? \\\"Honestly, though, I enjoyed it quite a bit and thanks for the extra length.\\\" That\\\'s just too easy...

ryan--is imax more expensive than a regular theater? and do they have popcorn there? :) nomi--stop diverting the message board! heehee J/K! that sucks that they\'re a-holes at that board. well, we all love you here! :) if you want, i\'ll go bust some heads---shrute style! i think i got about 400 on that quote game. it\'s really flawed. i pretty much know all the dialogue. (*sigh* i swear, i do other stuff than watch office episodes over and over...like, i now watch 30 rock episodes over and over...hee...hee...ughhh...) if you play it a second time, after you\'ve learned the \"correct\" answers, when you get to the actual clip of the quote, it\'s clearly not the same. hopefully they\'ll get some more quotes (accurate quotes!)up so you can play the game more than once.
-
elisa- it was 4 dollars more for me for imax but so worth it...the floor vibrates when something loud happens..and yes, they do have popcorn..and pretzel bites..but they were burned..mmm crunchy pretzel bites and holy crap you got a 400 they really should\'ve made that game multiple choice
-
Elisa, 400??? That\'s insane. I do think that some people just have a memory for that kind of thing and other people (me) don\'t. There\'s someone on The Office Forum (or somewhere else?) who more or less has the whole episode memorized after one viewing without even trying. But you\'re saying the endings of the quotes change if you play it a second time? That\'s weird. And, yes, there was a point about six months ago when I would have accepted your offer to bust some heads on the HBO boards. Oh, I wish I could explain the whole situation, but I\'ll just have to leave it at saying that I was impressively turn-the-other-cheek-ish.
-
They do use the Deadwood \\\"vocabulary.\\\" But that\\\'s not really the problem. There are some very intelligent posters there. One woman in particular has just an amazingly brilliant and passionate way of writing about the show; I\\\'ve never read anything quite like her. And she\\\'s welcoming and friendly and loves new ideas. But most of them are cliquish, snobby, and not exactly welcoming to new people, especially if, God forbid, you ask anything that you\\\'re \\\"supposed to\\\" already know. It\\\'s probably typical stuff; I\\\'m just not used to it and hate it. I still post on there sometimes -- I just can\\\'t expect much love. Oh, but one GREAT thing is that some of the actors and crew people post there and they are terrific. They\\\'re very open and generous and they LOVE the show. You can just talk to them like real people. Sorry. Don\\\'t mean to hijack the comments.
-
I think that game is designed to make you feel like a loser. Some sort of NBC reverse psychology experiment or something . . . But, really, Elisa\'s right. There are a lot of mistakes in it and ridiculous insistence on answering in precisely one way even when another way is perfectly correct -- e.g., you have to identify character by their first names only; if you put their whole names, it will say you\'re incorrect.
-
Yeah, I guess it does sound disgusting. But I have nowhere to reminisce about Deadwood since the HBO boards are so unfriendly, so sometimes it spills out in inappropriate places. Yes, I am longing for the days when I could watch snot drip out of the nose of a totally wasted bawling Calamity Jane . . . doesn\\\'t that make you want to run out and get the DVD? I don\\\'t think that level of visceral \\\"realness\\\" would work on NBC, however. I really do want to see them explode, though. It truly would be catharic. A girl can dream . . .
-
yeesh. the deadwood boards are really bad? now i\'m curious. if the show is any indication, i\'m guessing the people on that board used the word \"cock-sucker\" at the end of every sentence. i want to see \"300\" too but i\'m waiting on my friend who gave up frivilous spending for lent. she has a huge thing for gerard butler. i don\'t even know who that is. if it\'s anything like \"gladiator\" then i\'m probably going to hate it.
-
Nice job, both of you. Thanks. I agree with Ian -- it would be really satisfying, cathartic even, for Jim to get really angry at Pam. I wouldn\\\'t mind if it were for a good long time too, maybe the length of the cut scene of Stanley laying into Ryan again, but NOT for the comic effect this time: for the emotional effect. It would be great to see him play against character and against the sort of generally understated tone of the show and really freak out. Not in a disturbing Andy way; just in the way a normal human being actually could in this situation. It could work too with Pam freaking out and finally telling Jim how she feels in straight out non-mousey-Pam terms: crying, begging, passionate. I think that would be awksome. That\\\'s what Greg Daniels can give me as a present.
-
Martin: I know you\\\'re only like 17 or something, and your career has a way to go to compete with the longevity of Woody Allen, but I still feel justified in saying I preferred your early funny movies . . . um, I mean comments. Ahh, for the days when an episode was simply \\\"officially not a piece of shit\\\" . . .
-
hey matt, just an idea, on the next podcast give a time for everyone to be in the twss chat room at once. I think there were a couple cold opens in season 2 that had relevence to the actual episode..conflict resolution maybe? I don\'t remember. great podcast matt, 1 vote for conlfict resolution retro podcast. and elisa, your mexicanness is what defines you
-
yeah, i feel like there must have been a higher level joke they were trying for with that Karen line. My initial gut thought that she was trying to say something like \"they\'re going to think everyone here is like my \'female dog, rhymes with witch\'.\" But, that really wouldn\'t have been funny either.
-
The comments about the cold open were very appropriate. Fax from the Future was one of the few cold opens that really worked and was hilarious. The magic thing was overall pretty lame and clearly not as good as the material from the deleted scenes. Glad to have you guys back. I thought the opening discussion went on a little long as it was hard for me to remember all the details until I started hearing the clips (overall, I\\\'d say keep this portion of the show shorter in general - get to the clips faster and then talk longer). You always do a great job laying out the plot lines and this episode was no exception. I thought Hardin was great, but some of her \\\"confessions\\\" seemed a tad ridiculous and definitely smelled like Anchorman-style adlibs. \\\"I orgasm easily\\\" was not a believable statement for Jan to make. Definitely would like to hear your take on the new footage this week as well as Flenderson\\\'s hosting duties. Great \\\"super-sized\\\" show!
-
Sabai, we actually tried to talk about that deleted scene, but didn\\\'t get anywhere with it. And maybe that\\\'s my fault. I can\\\'t remember what Matt thought about Karen\\\'s line, but I thought she said exactly what she meant, and just tried to catch herself. But I\\\'m curious, of course, as to what others think.
-
matt, all those years of spanish paid off for you. sadly, you\'re probably more fluent than i am. ian, it\'s all good! nice accent on \"telenovelas\". thanks for celebrating my \"mexicanity\". LOL! sabai: i\'m totally with you on that zicam stuff! and i didn\'t really get that karen line either. i think maybe rashida just delivered the line awkwardly. i love the little moment with angela and oscar, too. it gave me warm fuzzies like the scene where dwight comforts pam. and toby\'s \"i\'m not doing your dirty work\"--ah, love that flenderson. :)
-
Ah, there\'s nothing like listening to your podcast for two hours while pretending to work. good to have you back. Matt, you still sound sick. Try Zicam, it\'s great! I was noticing today how you guys never seem to talk over each other, it\'s actually very impressive, the balance you\'ve created. More importantly, ok, you didn\'t explain the deleted scene that went over my head. Karen\'s talking head? \"They\'re going to think everyone\'s like My.....cael?\" Help me please.
-
ha! no, i definitely didn\'t abandon you guys on the board. work+midterms=madness! thanks for the b-day shout-out! :) yes, i DID ask for it...i told you guys, i\'m a nerd. (matt, you got my name right. c\'mon ian! heehee. you still rule.) so happy we get a new podcast today since nbc is giving us reruns--i mean \"newpeats\"....jerks. i totally agree with ian about greg daniels\'s comment, it sounds kind of condescending to me. what bugs me is that they\'re only putting in the effort to polish the show (adding deleted scenes) because they want to snag new viewers. us real fans already know about confusing storylines (e.g. andy at anger management) because we put in the \"effort\" (that\'s the only word that comes to mind. but i know we\'re really only clicking on a mouse) to find the deleted stuff. we already know those backstories. c\'mon daniels, throw us a friggin\' bone! (...twss) i also hope they follow through with that halpert ass-beating promised by roy. maybe it\'ll force him to nut-up and make a decision about pam and karen.
