From NBC.com:
WEIGHT LOSS | 09.25.2008 | 9/8c TV-PG
For
the first time, we see what happens over eight weeks of the summer, as
a Dunder Mifflin weight loss initiative causes the branch to diet and
become obsessed with their weight. Michael (Steve Carell) pursues a
friendship with his new HR rep, Holly (Oscar nominee Amy Ryan). Jim
(John Krasinski) misses Pam (Jenna Fischer) who attends art school in
New York. Dwight (Rainn Wilson), Andy (Ed Helms) and Angela (Angela
Kinsey) attend to unfinished business. B.J. Novak, Kate Flannery, Mindy
Kaling, Oscar Nuñez, Brian Baumgartner, Leslie David Baker, Phyllis
Smith, Creed Bratton and Craig Robinson also star.
---------------- As I mentioned in episode #48, I will be unable to view the premiere "live" tonight as I am forced to attend my school's "open house" night. Don't let that stop you from joining the "chatroom" to discuss the episode with other TWSS fans. Kevin should be around for the west coast showing. Man, I can't believe it's finally here. EDIT: Almost forgot -- NBC is helping to arrange various "premiere parties" for the show tonight in a number of cities across the US. Check this THREAD to see if anything is going on in your area. EDIT 2: Click HERE for a large downloadable copy of Pam's ASCII portrait of Dwight (warning-- link is to a PDF file). Also, go HERE to see Andy & Angela's wedding website.

I loved the episode. fave moments *Kelly passing out from her extreme weight loss antics. I know a lot of people who have tried the lemon juice, cayenne pepper, maple syrup concoction. *Michael ripping up the tickets. lol He is such a lovable idiot. *Angela\'s hook ups with Dwight. *Ryan being a temp - again. What is he going to do when Pam returns? *I loooooved the proposal. It totally caught me off guard. *The weight loss challenge was funny overall. what was up with the nacho cheese fountain? lol *phyllis not even bothering to report dwight\'s malfeasance to michael. lol she went straight to david wallace. *Oh, I almost forgot the moment that Holly said Kevin was mentally challenged. LOL!!!! I\'m glad they didn\'t play that joke out any more than they did. Still, weeks went by with her thinking he was retarted.

Wow! Much stronger premiere than last year. I loved just about everything about this episode except Andy\'s dogged determination to marry the little blonde harpy. Prediction: Pam\'s guy buddy at art school, \"Young Jim Belushi\", as he\'s known around my condo, will be the cause of a temporarily broken engagement and will become the most hated character on network TV. Besides Chuck.

Loved It! So happy to have The Office back & what a great episode to start off the season. Major props to the writers, producers & as always the cast for an awesome job. There were so many hysterical moments spaced throughout the entire episode that the hour just flew by, and I thought it was the perfect balance of plot lines. it was nice getting to hear from the entire crew (perfect amount of Creed!) The whole Ryan thing was unexpected and a little unrealistic. Although having him get called out by Jim and turned down by Kelly after his narcissistic excuse tirade was awesome. I am curious to see what the writers have planned. I am guessing that since his future at the company lies in Michael\'s hands Ryan\'s going to have to be the BFF that Michael has always wanted. Am I seeing matching outfits in the near future?

Wait? Did I just read that it will be pre-empted by the VP debate. SERIOUSLY?! SERIOUSLY?! What\'s more important.....our country or THE OFFICE?! Uh, I don\'t believe there\'s a choice?! Anyway..I loved this epi SO much. Can\'t wait for the podcast, guys. I can\'t say anything that hasn\'t already been addressed, but I do concur about Michael\'s goatee and Phyllis\'s face. IMHO, it was a little sloppy editing. I did see the deleted scene, but come on...let\'s not make obvious mistakes, writers. Either way, it rocked. I effing LOVE THIS SHOW!!
-
I agree with all the other posters that the premiere was great. Can\'t remember when all the posters thought an episode was great; there\'s almost always one person that didn\'t think it measured up. I think what we all loved were the little moments making it a satisfying watching experience end-to-end and the fact that the writers make the \"big\" developments like the proposal and the Dwight-Angela trysts just between the 2 characters involved. Wouldn\'t Phyllis have more of an eagle-eye on Angela now that she has the power? Phyllis might be the spoiler here in the future. Can\'t wait to see that. Would Ryan have only gotten off with community service in today\'s corporate environment? One look at today\'s headlines tells me probably yes. Small detail that I\'m sure someone else caught: what was Jim\'s IM handle? Was it a reference to Philly Jim from Second Life or something boring? Just wondering, and my husband deleted the episode off our DVR before I could check. Can\'t wait to hear the podcast guys!!
-
Is it just me, or is something up with Meredith\'s face in this episode? Is it the results of a bad chemical peel/is it part of the plotline/or is it just a very bad angle?? Hmmm. Though I was betting on no engagement, I\'m glad Jim pulled it off the way he did. Love the surprise and the rain is a nice \"ro-co\" touch. I may create a drinking game around how many times Joe Biden says Scranton during the VP debate this week--since it is on instead of the Office, I have to do something on Thursday...
-
Apparently I\'m the only one fuming about Ryan\'s return. All in all a great episode, BUT...say what you want about all Michael\'s antics, no way in HELL someone who committed corporate fraud would be simply be given community service, let alone allowed to come back and work for the company whose shareholders he defrauded.
-
Great episode. I loved seeing the rapid progression through the summer. It feels like we didn\'t miss anything and got to see a lot of development. I couldn\'t possibly care less about the proposal; everyone knew it was coming so I guess it\'s nice they didn\'t try to keep building up to it forever. (\"She doesn\'t want a long engagement\": Hmm, wonder what might happen on the hour-long episode airing right after the Super Bowl?) I actually felt bad for Andy though. And call me a nerd, but I am absolutely in love with Holly.
-
FINALLY got to see the episode. The Jim/Pam proposal was spoiled for me (thanks a lot Facebook status reports!) so when Jim started asking Pam if he could meet her for lunch, I had a feeling . . . and yet -- it was still totally sweet and really great to watch. Maybe I\'m just that much of a girlie romantic. I actually feel really bad for Andy. I can\'t believe I\'m saying that, but I do! He\'s going to be completely heart broken when Angela finally breaks up with him -- or will she? Maybe Dwight will do something ridiculously stupid again and she\'ll elope with Andy to get back at him . . . hmmmm. I couldn\'t even watch Michael ripping up the tickets. It hurt my heart and I kind of got a stomach ache. HOWEVER, Jim\'s face when he ran into the warehouse for weigh-in absolutely made up for it. Oh, and I\'d like to address the whole why-didn\'t-Pam-have-a-backbone-when-the-teacher-told-her-to-sit-down thing. I do agree that the teachers behaviour was strange considering that there is usually one or two people who go to the wrong class on the first day. However, I completely understand Pam\'s behaviour. She may be Fancy New Beesley in the office and amoung smaller groups of people, but despite how out going you force yourself to be, there are always going to be situations where your shyness gets the better of you. She had already admitted to being a small fish in a big city, and she was probably a bit overwhelmed and it was an initial reaction. She probably thought of a zillion better reactions after she sat down.
-
I loved this episode- Michael being sweet to 8Kelly, Kelly standing up to Ryan, Angela being brought down a peg or two by Phyllis, Stanley wanting his biceps back, and of course, the proposal- very nicely done. Last season I really liked Dwight- I didn\'t like him much in this episode. He was a little extreme- was that bug killer he sprayed on the leftovers? How does David Wallace not fire him after Phyllis makes the call? But, I am so happy that good surprises are back in the show. Can\'t wait to hear the podcast!

oh, i have so much love for this episode. it was like meeting up with an old friend that has kind of sucked for a while and then someone knocked the sense back into them and they went back to their old selves. this felt very season 2esque and i totally loved it. obv, the JAM proposal, which nearly made me fall off of my bed in excitement. i have fallen in love with jim all over again. i think what i like best about it is that it was a very small portion of the episode. my favorite plotlines are one that focus mostly on the office, with little bits of extra. the kevin/holly thing was truly great as well, along with michael trying so very hard to be good around holly, yet still getting it a bit wrong. as for the dwangela thing, i have a feeling they kind of just nuzzle each other, or as andy would say \'neck.\' i can\'t imagine angela sleeping with dwight before she\'s married. as for the weight thing, i think she was purposely not losing weight to mess up the wedding more. andy said he needed the 5 days for the wedding/honeymoon (i can\'t remember which), so i think she was sabotaging (awww beach games!). there\'s a lot more i really liked about this episode, and i\'m sure i\'ll find things wrong with it on a second viewing, but i think it was a very strong premiere and i\'m super excited for the rest of the season.
-
Oh my god, the season premier was so amazing!! It actually brought me to tears when Jim proposed!! And there was such a friendly mood throughout the entire episode. I feel like this season is going to be incredible! The writer\'s really have me hooked (again). I liked watching Michael tumble down the stairway. I liked it when Ryan said \"...she\'s perfect\". That was so cute! Everything is so happy!!!
-
Oh Val! You\'re totally right! Now the, \"My doctor wants me to gain weight\" quote makes a lot more sense. Now, I\'m hoping for an in office blow out, where people start congratulating Andy and he goes ballistic, because he knows the kid\'s not his (him wanting the washboard abs for \"the first time Angela sees me naked\") Good catch, Val
-
i was a bit taken aback with angela\'s trysts... at first. but then i remembered that this was the same \'church girl\' lying naked on dwight\'s hotel bed! aren\'t the church girls always the dirtiest!? ;) so i for one loved it - hilarious!!!!! i agree with phil... the forced celibacy was the clincher, too! :) i died laughing at how matter of fact she was about picking up the phone to page dwight with andy RIGHT THERE and then dwight\'s beeline out the door move LOL!!!!!!!

So long as I\\\\\\\'m not breaking precedent by posting a second comment... Did anybody else feel the professor asking Pam to sit down when she was leaving at the beginning of class was unreasonable? I can\\\\\\\'t even count how many times in my own university experience that people leave at the beginning of a new class because they read the class room wrong. I thought it was even more unrealistic that \\\\\\\'fancy new Beesly\\\\\\\' wouldn\\\\\\\'t speak up and just say \\\\\\\"I\\\\\\\'m in the wrong class,\\\\\\\" or just leave without saying anything. It\\\\\\\'s not like the professor can really do anything about it. Maybe Pam isn\\\\\\\'t as aware of these it-happens-to-everybody sort of things, but I was really disappointed that Pam didn\\\\\\\'t show more backbone.
-
I liked many parts of this episode but I think they did have some unrealistic character development. For instance, I think Ryan would be more against retuning to the office of his past. Maybe they could have shown him struggling financially before having to agree to Michael\'s offer to return. Or at least feel more uncomfortable about it. And, does anyone else thing angela\'s pregnant? We know Stanley lost 7 lbs, and everyone else seemed to really be trying --yet they kept gaining weight near the end. At one point the camera even zoomed in on angela for an extra second when they were talking about the increased numbers. Two pregnancies in one season? That seems a bit much but weirder things have happened. About the proposal- I love how the office writers always manage to make something that I knew would eventually happen still seem like a pleasant unexpected surprise!
-
I assume Michael tore up the tickets because he didn\'t want Holly asking anyone else to the concert. Until he can work up the courage, he doesn\'t want anyone else making progress with her. She\'s definitely ready for a relationship. I don\'t think she got his act of \"interest\". I can also understand Angela\'s unusual office behavior. She\'s been prim and proper for years. Then she got a taste of the Dwightster, then she had a forced celibacy (dating Andy). She was \"hungry\". Did she later give Andy a genuine smile? He seems to keep working it until he does something that impresses her (the a capella song with his buddies on the phone). Like everyone, glad to have the proposal done with. I live for Pam\'s subtle smiles and expressions. It\'s not heavy acting but it\'s touching. Great to watch her show her feelings over the years. I would like to have one normal successful relationship in a TV series.
-
Since we\'re doing P.S.\'s, I bring up Sgt. Peppers, because since we consider season 2 THE OFFICE\'s to be their Sgt. Peppers year (ie. the year that everything clicked together and became a perfect season), that with this ep, that season 5 could also potentially be their Sgt. Peppers year. Also, I loved Kelly\'s talking head where she looked sick as a dog. Just her weak \"amazing\" did it for me.
-
First of all, loved the episode. For the first time in five years I actually liked B.J. Novak as an actor. The undertone of Ryan\'s emotional vulnerability mixed with his irrepressible megalomania was actually protrayed with skill, and I enjoyed every scene Ryan was in. Especially the scene between Ryan and Kelly in which Kelly finally displayed a bit of emotional maturity and Ryan has to eat crow. Loved the proposal, it\'s spontaneity made it incredibly special, but I would\'ve loved to have seen Michael \"get it\" at the end with Holly, the way Jim finally seemed to \"get it\" with Pam. When he ripped up those tickets I wanted to kick 12 cakes at him. Which brings me to Dwandygela. Is it just me, or does it seem a little far fetched that after years of unrepentant prudishness -- \"The slow tain from Philly\" \"Pam\'s the office matress\" etc.. etc.. -- that Angela would not only set up repeated sexual trysts with a cat killer, but do it work, at midday, behind her \"fiance\'s\" back? I get where the writers are going on this one -- now that PH&J are on cloud nine, we need the relationship drama -- but it seems they betrayed a Angela\'s character out of convenience. For as good as the writer\'s did with Jim and Pam, they blew it with the cliche and unrealistic Dwandygela arc.
-
Sorry for the second post, but this Michael thing has really got me thinking. I know the golden rule is \\\"comedy = conflict\\\" and vice versa, but when are the writer\\\'s going to hook Michael up with the brains to land this Holly chick? If they\\\'re going to have Michael fail like he did tonight when he ripped up those tickets, why can\\\'t they make it because of an emotional shortcoming, rather than an intellectual one. Say, if Michael ripped up the tickets because for the first time in his life, he actually is starting to feel true love, and that scares him, or maybe embarrasses him, and he rips them up as in a psychological move to simultaneously save face and appear either gallant or \\\"cool\\\" in front of Holly. Tonight, Michael didn\\\'t realize Holly wanted him to ask her out, but is that emotional naivety, or is he just a moron? And if he\\\'s such a moron, then how do you explain the skill that Michael displays when he\\\'s working the emotions of clients he sells paper so successfully to? Michael\\\'s sensitive, and he really should have understood what Holly was doing. Maybe I agree he should have ripped up the tickets, in order to make Season 5 about Michael\\\'s ascension to the next level of his life, which hopefully includes what appears to his soul mate, but have him rip them up because he doesn\\\'t know how to deal with the new emotions he\\\'s feeling, not because he\\\'s idiot. Dear Writers, You\\\'ve already established Michael Scott is not Homer Simpson... Quit writing him as such. All right, that\\\'s enough out of me.
-
Great episode, but I think there was a continuity issue with the goatee storyline. Michael had it, then did not have it in the break room and it was not referenced, then he had it again when he noticed Ryan did not before he ultimately shaved it. I find it hard to believe they would make that great an error and I would love to be corrected, but I don\'t see how it fits. Maybe you guys can address it on the podcast, which I\'m looking forward to with great anticipation.
-
\"We\'re Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. We hope you will enjoy the show. Sgt. Pepper\'s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Sit back and let the evening go...\" Why am I quoting Sgt. Peppers? Because I think that with this episode, THE OFFICE is setting the stage for it\'s most jam packed season since season 2. I\'d go on and on about tonight\'s ep, but I think I\'ll let the ep speak for itself.
-
The season premier was definitely a win for me. All the loose ends left by the finale were tied up nicely, it was HILARIOUS, and we got our engagement!!! I liked how they did the proposal: It was a surprise like Jim said it would be, it was simple in the way everything in PB&J\'s relationship has been up to this point, and it happened in the RAIN---seriously, rain always ups the romance factor exponentially, and this kissing scene is going to rank right up there with the scene from The Notebook. Bravo.
-
I liked it. A cram packed hour of a ton of things going on maybe too much to digest at an initial viewing. Really loved the misdirection that it looked like Pam and Jim were drifting and even Pam meets someone in class and all of a sudden it turns into the proposal from no where. Very surprised. Surprises everywhere with Ryan coming back and the best moment was either the cake being kicked at Michael or Toby with a broken neck....Did not disappoint...Leaves me more hopeful for a good season.
-
Ok, I just have to say: Ryan looked like some kind of human black hole, walking around all dressed in black with that goatee. Or maybe a simmering vortex of evil? Has he officially sold his soul to Satan yet? Everything else was pretty funny-- I particularly liked the way Holly\'s \"special\" perception of Kevin imploded, though I thought there should have been a little more fallout. It was also interesting to see Phyllis as Angela\'s tormenter, and not the other way around. I wonder if Angela is going to try to get her power back, or will remain preoccupied with keeping Andy (and Here Comes Treble) as far away from her as possible. And of course, the proposal was EPIC! Aww man, I\'m glad we got that out of the way. I really felt like we were watching Jim grow up over this hour, as he grew more and more frustrated with his Pam-less life and finally took the bull by the horns and asked her to marry him. (And is that a real gas station? Cuz, major spot in \"Office\" lore established right there.)
-
First post? Woo! Anyway, welcome back to The Office! This episode reaffirmed my thoughts that this season is going to be great. I laughed out loud more in this hour than for half of last season. Not that I didn\'t like last season, it just was a different kind of funny. This was the type of episode that made me appreciate the show in Season One. And OH MY GOD! Totally wasn\'t expecting Jim to do it, and he did! As a friend of mine said about Tony Stark in the Iron man movie, \"He just f___ing said it!\" And he did. And now I am smiling a lot. 10 out of 10. Welcome back, Office!
