The Cast Imagines Life In Scranton
Just thought this was somewhat interesting-- The Scranton Times-Tribune interviewed several cast members of THE OFFICE, asking them what they thought of when they thought of the REAL city of Scranton, PA (none of them has ever been there, aside from Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, and Kate Flannery).

So what do they imagine Scranton is like?

Jenna Fischer (Pam): “I’ve always imagined Scranton as something like a hybrid of St. Louis and Kirksville (the small Missouri town where she attended college). Not as small as Kirksville, but not as big as St. Louis,? said Ms. Fischer, who also pictures a bunch of family-owned businesses doing battle with the Wal-Marts of the world. “I always imagine Roy’s family owned an appliance store.?

Ed Helms (Andy): “Cold, for some reason. I have like a frigid association with it. And a little bit like the smaller towns around Atlanta where I grew up. Sort of like some strip malls and some low rise office buildings. And a very charming and cheerful population.?

Angela Kinsey (Angela): “I picture sort of a quaint New England town.? Well, Ms. Kinsey will find out for herself in May, when she and co-star Brian Baumgartner (Kevin) visit Scranton to promote a proposed “Office? convention that organizers hope to hold sometime this fall.

Oscar Nuñez (Oscar): “I grew up in New Jersey, so I picture it like New Jersey. When I see the opening credits, yeah, I know about that town. It’s industral, there’s a lot of people.?

Leslie David Baker (Stanley): “Not as action-packed as this office. People aren’t knocking each other down or knocking cups out of their hands. Probably real quiet, peaceful. That’s a good safe answer, isn’t it??

Kate Flannery (Meredith), a Philadelphia native who has been to Scranton:
“What I love about Scranton is that it seems like it hasn’t been corrupted by the ’70s and ’80s architecture,? said Ms. Flannery, who visited friends at the University of Scranton in the mid-1980s. “It feels like the architecture is very pure ... I just love the sense of history of it. It’s also a great college town.?

My girlfriend and I drove into town back in January of 2007, but we didn't get to see much in those 25 minutes.  Maybe someday...

EDIT:

Did I just miss them saying people are trying to organize an OFFICE convention sometime in the fall?  Has this been common knowledge?  It's news to me.  Sounds like the first TWSS roadtrip!

EDIT 2:

The Scranton Times ALSO had an article recently talking about how Scranton is becoming a tourist destination for fans of THE OFFICE.  Hey, it worked on me... one shocking bit of news?  The "Welcome To Scranton" sign featured in the opening (which I was trying to find) had been mothballed by the city!  City officials are talking about bringing it out of the warehouse, though, since people keep wanting to see it.  I guess you can't blame the local tourist bureau for trying to cash in on this... that's where the aforementioned "fan convention" comes in.
