Episode # 14 of THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID find both Matt and Ian reaching for the bleep button as Matt goes off the deep end... With Dwight gone, who will fill that oddly shaped hole in our hearts? Why Oscar of course... and not just because he's gay. We also appreciate his mexicanity! Lemonyaday all around! Andy's gotten his wish for more face-time with michael, but is that a GOOD thing? Will Halpert finally step up to the plate and come clean to Karen? There's one thing Ms. Fillipelli forgot about the Scranton branch-- nothing brings two star-crossed lovers together like a mind-destroying prank. re: the bleeping Hey gang, I have never read your blog, and have always dl\'d the podcast via iTunes. So when I heard it, and the F word bleep, I didn\'t get that it was a joke. Actually, I didn\'t mind the bleep, but it did bother me that you didn\'t bleep the S word. I think more than either it bugged me that you left the GDs in and bleeped the F. So, now reading here it was a joke, I don\'t know what to think. If you bleep bad words, bleep em all, but not just some. If it was just y\'all a goofin\' around, mmmkay. Just let us in on it. Great podcast, thanks for putting in the effort. It makes the drive home go fast!

Hey guys, as usual, fabulous podcast. Andy\'s dive off the deep end did feel a tad abrupt, but I need to watch season three straight through before I make my final judgment. I think all the breaks between episodes make me forget things about characters, and I have a feeling it won’t feel SO abrupt after all. As you mentioned in the \\\'cast, Andy\\\'s temper has been hinted at from the beginning -- the rubbish bin kicking and the napkins in the break room after the news that Stamford was closing instead of Scranton. (though, that may have been a deleted scene. . .) He has always been strangely annoyingly tactless (remember the “I’m so horny? line that also brought on a prank ala Jim?) but we’ve only seen him in small doses. Of course, now that this episode was virtually Dwight-less it was like Andy over dose. Also, because he had no Dwight to distract him from Michael from time to time, he was all about Michael. I think he honestly believed before Traveling Salesman that Michael believes they’re newly best friends (after all, up to that point, he had been Michael’s new best friend. . .) but the failed sales attempts have scared him into thinking his new role may be compromised. He had to act and act fast. Wow, I hope that made any kind of sense at all. I\'m heavily drugged right now (cold medicine. . . it\'s not even exciting!) and can hardly remember my name. . .

Elizabeth, I\'m a complete Dwanger too. I rewatched past episodes recently and was amazed at what a great couple they\'ve become. Sure they\'re \"different\" but they are so good to each other... -Dwight took the tax info to NY and left DM to protect her. -The mutual support for their shared horrible day in Benihana Xmas. Him standing by her chair while she played the cd player was so sweet. - She went to Philly to spend time with him and waited for him in his hotel room. - She left work sick to see and tape him giving his award speech. So much more but we can\'t forget the bobblehead. Monkey and Possum are awesome!

Thanks to your podcast I have 2 things running constantly through my mind this week: 1. \"Andy and the Tuna,\" sung to the tune of Benny & the Jets. Thanks, very much, Here Comes Treble! 2. \"A gift shows someone: I care about you this many dollars worth.\" Gotta love those classic Michael-isms. I have listened to many podcasts in the past year, but for the past week or so, yours is the one I listen to at work - exclusively. Thanks for the great work, Scranton!

ian, do you do the ol\' \"which way to the weight room\" bit? hahaha! guys pretty much stare at boobs whether or not something is written on your shirt---am i right, men? i personally don\'t think i could pull of pants with writing on the bum. while other girls can with no problem, my family and friends would pretty much make fun of me until they got me to cry...and then they\'d laugh some more! boobs!
-
i meant \"pull off\"...but \"pull off pants\" still sounds bad...i should have said i can\'t pull that STYLE off. i tend to have regular bouts of verbal diarreah but not in written form...i should get more sleep. andy, that clip was hilarious! i love the new edits of movies and tv shows that people have been doing lately. i saw the re-cut trailer for \"the shining\" and another one for \"garden state\" that was pretty funny.
-
Maybe during this non-Office week Matt could do a survey. \"Women, have a voice. Please tell us if you prefer ass-staring or boob-staring. And, don\'t worry -- there will be plenty of opportunity for nuanced comments because we know that you are complex beings and not just blobs of boobs and butts.\"

Hmm. I have to somewhat disagree with Dave on the \\\"growth\\\" front. I agree that generally in sitcoms, character development is not what it\\\'s about. Though, ANY story has to have some bit of it even if it\\\'s a back and forth thing. But, yes, there is no substantial character growth on sitcoms, even the great ones. It\\\'s often almost part of the joke -- that no matter what so-and-so never learns. But I think The Office has played with that expectation. True, though, character development and character complexity are not the same thing -- seeing Angela able to recognize that she had treated Oscar badly, and even apologize for it, and even break down in a way we\\\'ve never quite seen before, does not mean that she is actually going to develop. Likewise with seeing the \\\"softer\\\" side of Dwight. But I think we\\\'ve seen enough to know that, at the very least, the IDEA of a character being able to grow, mature, change is an aspect of what they are trying to do with the show, both dramatically and comedically. How successful they are at portraying that is another question, but I think it\\\'s very clear that whatever your opinion of Jim\\\'s return to pranking, the possibility of the character\\\'s growth is vital to the story. Same with Pam. (\\\"Jim\\\'s return to pranking.\\\" Sounds like I\\\'m talking about an addict. Man, Jim really feel off the wagon there. Maybe with Michael\\\'s support, he can start attending PA. Prankers Anonymous. Michael will make sure it\\\'s not anonymous, though . .. . then: home theatre for Jim. Oscar will be pissed .. . .)
-
erin: wow, that\'s both awesome and kind of questionable, i hope they aren\'t just creepy guys that are using it as an excuse to stare at your butt. though, some people might like that. it\'s \"awksome\" in elisabeth/nomi\'s words. i don\'t have the confidence to wear pants with something written across the bum but i would wear a team pam shirt! :)
-
matt: a lot of documentarians might shoot footage for a couple years before they sit down to start creating and editing the actual film. if they have the financial means, most would choose to shoot for a couple of years so that they can record some kind of development in the subjects they are shooting. if they were shooting a reality show, sure, i would expect that they would have aired it on tv by now, but in the context of \"the office\" they are doing a documentary (at least, that\'s what i gathered) and not a reality show a la \"laguna beach\" (bleccch!!). a lot of times, the filmmaker starts out with the intention to make a documentary on one subject but in the midst of shooting, they might realize it isn\'t working or there is another aspect of the story that they realize is way more important or engaging, so the end project turns out to be something completely different from the original idea. (yeah, that was a long winded explanation!)
-
Thanks, Elisa. You might be the only person who read my comment.;) And, yeah, I know I\'m pretty much alone in a dark wilderness about the pranks. Perhaps, one lonely day, I\'ll inadvertently bump into a sympathizer . . . Actually, my mom hates practical jokes too. Must be in the DNA.
-
great podcast..as usual If Jim and Pam get together I hope they keep karen on the show. Maybe another romance with ryan or someone (kelly karen cat fight? oh my). I was surprised Dwight didn\\\'t mention his martial arts training, he made such a big deal about when jim and pam put his resume\\\' on monster.com last year. matt, you said the other office podcast\\\'s name? gasp....and I noticed that you changed the name so the office was in the title so it would come up in a search, good call. and from the looks of it the next two episodes look to be great....if you look at all the episodes that have involved alchohol they have been great dundies, booze cruise, christmas party, casino night, can\\\'t wait maybe another retro podcast this week matt? cough cough conflict resolution cough cough (my favorite). thx alot guys
-
it doesn\'t surprise me that dwight and angela still act as if the camera crew has no idea about their relationship. they\'re both pretty kooky, it seems like they assume that if they act as if they are just co-workers, everyone will believe them. obviously, dwight\'s acting experience from his role as \"mutey\" in \"oklahoma\" isn\'t paying off as well as he may think. i agree that they should do more with the documentary aspect of the show. since ricky gervais has said he will never reprise the role of david brent, i think he could guest star as another character from the documentary crew. i think it would be hilarious if he played a character based off of nick broomfield--he would rock the shit outta that role!
-
Kevin, we were wondering who might be the first one to point out we neglected to play Andy\'s scene. (Actually, Matt noticed it. I was clueless.) We should totally send you an empty ink cartridge as a prize, or something like that. :) Seriously though - thanks to everyone for the kind words. It makes the whole thing so much fun.

\"East coaster! I\'m in Brooklyn, NY, and I never sleep. And I\'m also the other Ian Matt podcasts with. :D posted by: Ian L.\" Ahhh. Yay, Brooklyn. (Me too.) And, considering all you Ians out there, Ian C. should not have so much trouble leaving his real name with the coffee gals. (Have to read his blog to understand .. . ) I looked at your site, Ian L., and saw that you did a podcast, but I did not realize you were \"the other Ian.\" I don\'t know how you guys do so much. Freaks!
-
I\'ll send an audio comment in but gotta get this off my chest. I think after this episode it is clear that Ian needs a promotion! The \"other Office podcast\" line had me covering my mouth so as to not draw attention to myself at the office! Ian had all the best lines in this episode and I think was more correct regarding the writing and Jim/Pam issues. The point you guys are missing is that while Michael has a certain management style, Jim\'s management style is pranks. I don\'t think the phone thing was mean at all -- he told Andy right away where the phone was (and, honestly, it was probably sitting on the ceiling tile that was loose from when the Christmas tree broke through it last season). Ian was right -- the others in the office are looking to Jim to do something. As for the \"no growth\" thing, it seems to me that Jim is growing a lot by admitting to Karen that he still has feelings for Pam. (and, sorry, but Karen has nobody to blame but herself. Who did she think Jim was going to run to? Duh!) As for Andy\'s meltdown, Ian was close to the point. He\'s never had this kind of success but the poor sales performance hurt him with Michael. Listening to just the audio of the meltdown and punching the wall, I think it was believable. He knows he cannot defeat Jim and just lost it. Believe me, I\'ve seen things like that in real life. If the scene with Andy was so important, why didn\'t you play it? I agree it should have been in the regular cut (\"I\'m going to management training. Anger management, but management nonetheless.\" Classic!) BTW - yeah, the sound was crappy but mostly at the end of the show. You disclaimer was a nice touch. Another great episode! No time travel episode this week? :-(
-
Oh, weird. I see that \"famous\" Ian posts as Ian C. Didn\'t catch that. But at least I knew there was something different. Also nice not being the only person on the planet up in the middle of the night. Though, you could be on the west coast where it would not be unreasonable to still be awake.

I went over to lifeintheoffice.com to check out the Flendeesly information. I guess they don\'t demand that the extras stay tight lipped??? He\'s spoilering right and left. Nothing huge so far, but way more than I\'ve ever heard any of the actors give away. Anyway, in a post today he (assuming he\'s a he, not sure) says that the POBYness is really just another awkward interaction. :( I confirmed that I (and I guess Elisabeth) seem to be in a distinct minority. The posters over there were grossed out by Flendeesly.
-
This episode, while still quite amusing, did feel as if it was missing a certain something. The Andy vs. Jim segments were great, but we did not get nearly enough Dwight to satisfy my tastes. The Director\'s Cut gave us more of an insight into how Angela was feeling and gave us the great talk between Pamgela (had to), yet they still not not capitalize on nearly as many moments at Staples as they could have. Also, while Oscar\'s return is welcome, it felt like it was fit into the episode to give the characters something to do, as opposed to being the focal point like he deserved in his return. Ah well, I guess Oscar gets no love. All in all, a good episode that could have been great had we gotten more back story...and good old fashioned Dwight goodness!
-
Possible Flendeesly action? I hadn\'t heard that. Why is that so thrilling? Honestly, I find that thrilling in an almost . . . I don\'t know, fetishy way. I hope that 15-year-old isn\'t reading this. I already asked what\'s wrong with me once tonight, so I\'ll try to act as though this is somehow completely normal.
-
Ouch. My inner Jammer is hurt. I\'ve said this once before, but the Jim and Pam I\'m rooting to get together are back in Season Two. I read a spoiler from one of the shows\' extras on lifeintheoffice.com that an upcoming Office will have some POBY action, which would be make all my wildest dreams come true. Go Team Flendeesly! I can hear your imitations now...\"whhhhyy?\"

\"Rushed writing.\" Yeah. I know Ian was being a little sarcastic about that, and I agree that it\'d be somewhat lame for anyone to use being rushed as an excuse for sloppy writing. But, I keep thinking, geez, it\'s not HBO where they can take a year to make one episode. In the end, I cut them a lot of slack because it\'s such a lovable show and, I think, an incredible feat that they pull off as much as they do. Nevertheless, to me, there are a TON of inconsistencies that irritate me to varying degrees -- the stuff you guys mentioned, plus plenty of other similar ones about pretty much every character. They definitely drop the ball a lot. But they hit it out of the park so often too. (See, I know all about sports . . . ) I should be rattling off examples here, but that would take effort and space, so just think up some while reading this. And I keep coming back to the following, which I know I\'ve already said in comments before, but all brilliant thoughts deserve repeating, right?: As successful as The Office is at giving us startlingly affecting emotional content, it is still a comedy first. And that means that when something is going to be sacrificed, it\'s more often going to be the realistic-ness of the characters, rather than the comedy. Obviously, they are related; if the characters become too unbelievable, they won\'t be funny, and clearly that happens sometimes, though we\'ll disagree about exactly when. But, really, if you think about it enough, you could pick on every single character for being \"unrealistic\" in so many ways. Sometimes I think it is absolutely amazing that through some kind of alchemy, they feel as real and three dimensional as they do. I mean, the character of Michael Scott in lesser hands would just be a ridiculous two dimensional joke. Steve Carell, with some of the most nuanced comic acting I\'ve ever had the pleasure of watching, makes Michael a believable layered human being. But really, is the character realistic? No way. No way could that character exist out here. Same with Dwight. And Rainn. The disparity is most obvious with those two characters (and I think Steve Carell and Rainn Wilson are the most dazzling of all the fabulous people on the show), but really it\'s true for all of them. It\'s a constant balancing act. One other thing on a totally different, not really relevant to anything subject. All the talk in the podcast about pranking made me think once again that I feel like the only person on Earth who really doesn\'t like practical jokes. I don\'t even like watching them on a TV show, even when someone \"deserves\" them. I just feel uncomfortable and bad for the recipient no matter what. I wonder if there is anyone else who loves the show as much as I do who hates watching the pranks. People talk about their favorite Jim prank, and, I swear, I practically shiver. I think of Dwight hitting himself in the head with the \"nickeless\" phone and I feel terrible. And we didn\'t even witness that one! Is something wrong with me?
-
listening to the podcast presently (thanks.. its always fun). I liked the line about andy being \"michael turned up to 11\"... at which point, it occured to me... that its just the personality mirroring. Andy is uber-creepy because Michael is pretty creepy... which is great that Michael is creeped out by... himself. Maybe on Andy\'s return to the office he\'ll have a new plan for Michael: \"suitcases, plane, Sandals, beach, Tequila, half-naked, lotion, pictures, ...\" Maybe if we get Michael leaving in a future episode (and Andy back from management training) we can see Jim take over for a while... and Andy start pranking as a mirror... look out Phyllis... \'ree-nee-neeee....\'.
-
me too, i like \"dwangela\"...i just hope they don\'t find out angela is pregnant, i hate when shows do that. matt: the audio was SHIT!! heehee! as if you didn\'t know. awesome tirade on the producers cut. that bleep button cracked me up! i have to side with ian though that your a \"flip-flopper\" about the pam/jim stuff and the office getting back to normal. what gives?! i agree, however, that the storyline felt kind of rushed. as much as i want jim and pam to get together, i wouldn\'t mind some kind of development in the jim/karen department. (not a development as in they stay together as a couple. sorry, i\'m JAM all the way!) also, i hope andy never comes back--he had his run.
-
I love tonight\'s podcast, but I don\'t think it is bad writing to make Andy go off the deep end. The key part of the story was seeing how Andy goes a bit crazy at the end of the Traveling Salesman episode. He really can\'t sell product and pushed Michael away from the sale. He knows he lost value in Michael\'s eyes and Andy knows it. So in order to gain value, he throws someone else (i.e. Dwight) under the bus in order for him to look good. And he wins. He finds out that he won by throwing Dwight under the bus. Now he\'s left at Dunder Mifflin, but he\'s still a failure. He knows that he\'s a failure. He isn\'t even doing well at his job and he\'s looking for a way to look better (instead of actually doing work). Note that everyone seems busy except for Andy, who takes the time to goof off instead of doing work. Andy can feel the tension in the room and he tries his best to impress people rather than impressing people with work. Michael likes work. If anything, Michael believes that work helps his business. Michael appreciates Jim because not only is Jim cool, but Jim is a good salesman. I think Michael is more pissed off that Andy is a bad salesman and he dislikes when people tries to kiss his ass. Andy picks up on this and still tries to be \"cool.\" That\'s the key point. Andy wants to be one of the \"cool\" guys or part of the \"in\" crowd. He desperately wants that so he does his best to \"trick\" his way into getting into this job rather than just doing his job. Unfortunately, he doesn\'t achieve what he wants. He isn\'t cool. He\'s even being made fun of by the Office. So he snaps and unlike the first episode where he snaps, he feels that everyone is against him. - G (PS: as far as Dwight\'s competence is concerned, he won the top sales role because he took a huge client from Jim...a client that Jim attributes to more than half his sales for the year)
