by Kevin Crossman There's been a lot of speculation about the Scranton Strangler, a plotline that seemed like a throwaway joke back on "The Delivery" but has been mentioned repeatedly in subsequent episodes. One might think that since they have mentioned the strangler frequently we will eventually learn the identity. Of course, the very topic of the strangler is odd; The Office is known for uncomfortable and awkward humor but serial killing is quite a bit of a darker shade of gray don't you think? On TWSS #94, Matt and I speculated on who we think the strangler might be, if the killer is a character we know from the show. Matt chose Gabe, which makes a lot of sense. The new Sabre character appeared in Scranton at about the same time as the killer and his "odd" personality would lend itself to serial killer theories. On the other hand, I chose Toby. A beloved (by some) and longtime character, Toby would be a unexpected choice. But, something tells me that the whimpy Toby has a dark and violent side. So, what do you think? Who do you think the Scranton Strangler is? What do you think of even the very topic of a serial killer on a comedy show?

I think its the new traveling salesman hes charming, strong, charismatic, he has an alibi to for pretty much any thing since he is the traveling sales man he doesnt predate the scranton strangler since the show never specified how long he was there for the character was brought in for a reason and i think it was to be the scranton strangler because he was brought in four episodes ago and hes only been in two. when we find out he was the scranton strangler i want you to think of me. I CALLED IT and he kills michael (going out on a limb)

had a revelation that the S.S. is Rolf, Dwights new friend he met in the shoe store who needed shoes that would make him faster but not leave any tracks. This is the same guy who helped Dwight with Jim and Pams kitchen while they were honeymooning, the one responsible for telling Angela that one fiancee plus one lover equals one WHORE! AND if you look up the Scranton Strangler in Dunderpedia, check out whose pic and link are below.

I think it\'s Isabel. And I think at some point, Dwight will end up becoming a volunteer for the Sheriff\'s Department because they\'ll need all the help they can get to \"crack\" the case and Dwight will be the one to find the killer. Thus, finally achieving the hero status he\'s longed for all along. Without having to resort to a diabolical plot that never works anyway.

As Dwight would say and I\'m paraphrasing, \"the killer\'s not the person you most suspect, or the person you least suspect. It\'s always the person you medium suspect.\" At first I immediately thought of Gabe too, but I don\'t think the writers will have one of our beloved characters turn out to be the killer. I\'m thinking some random person that may have a connection to Dunder Mifflin like a client or the pizza guy from Alfredo\'s Pizza Cafe. Happy guessing!

I mentioned it in an email to TWSS, but I\'ll mention it here too -- my vote\'s for Gabe. Timeline-wise, it also makes sense...and even if Gabe\'s job, it could make sense. Perhaps he goes from place to place, setting up new offices, strangling a few people, and quietly and awkwardly stick-insect-ing away to help a new Sabre branch somewhere else...

The Scranton Strangler is totally David Wallace. He\\\'s already gone off the deep end since being fired from Dunder Mifflin. And now watching the Scranton branch be bought out and thrive is just too much for him... he may also be responsible for the Sabre printer fires

Another point in the case for Toby: We know he was in love with Pam. He couldn\'t have been too happy that she got pregnant by and then married Jim. We also know the Strangler struck again when Pam was in the hospital. Toby wasn\'t among the group of coworkers sitting in the waiting room . . . I can totally see Gabe as a serial killer; like the other poster said, he\'s \"a creeper.\" My only gripe with him is that he\'s just too new to the show for us to have a vested interest in. I wouldn\'t stand up and cheer when they led him off in handcuffs like I would for Toby.

Gabe fits the serial killer profile a little too well, which makes me think the writers are throwing us off the scent. Toby is another fine choice, especially considering he literally has nothing left to live for. I\'m going out on a limb here though and cast my vote for Dwight as the strangler. We\'re going to come to learn that Dwight\'s been strangling cows or swine belonging to rival farms in an attempt to drum up need for less stranglable fare, such as beets. I don\'t think there\'s been mention of what is actually being strangled, and, considering something like, say, a horse rape, would make front page headlines in a backwater \'burgh like Scranton, certainly cow strangling could be front page news as well. Besides, Gabe\'s to skinny to strangle and Toby\'s too fat. It takes at least a purple belt to get that kind of physical job done.

I stick by my statement (& thanks for reading it on the podcast!) that the strangler is Toby. He is so weak and ineffectual, so casually abused by everyone, that he simply HAS to have a volcano\'s worth of pent-up rage inside of him. Although, I was just thinking, we haven\'t heard from Jan for awhile . . . maybe her post-partum hormones have run amok? Just a happy thought. :)

I personally think it\'s either Gabe or Toby, however I am pointing more towards Gabe since. I remember way back when Jim was nearly pummeled by Roy, that was pretty heavy subject matter for a comedic sitcom and they pulled it off well. I think it could be a way to get rid of Gabe, since he, next to Toby is one of the weakest of the cast and well, we sort of hate him.

I don\'t know if I like the idea that anyone from the cast is the Scranton Strangler. They\'re all horrible people, but I don\'t think that any one of them (even Toby or Gabe) could actually kill anyone. If it does develop into a plot point for the show, I\'m hoping it\'s someone on the periphery - not one of the regular Office folks, but maybe someone we\'ve met once or twice, or maybe someone we\'ve heard about a lot - maybe Oscar\'s ex, Gil. Of course, if it\'s Gil, then there\'s probably a chance that he\'d try to murder Oscar (or what\'s-his-name from the warehouse), and that wouldn\'t really fit in a comedy show, either. Ok, then. Apparently I just don\'t like the idea of a serial killer story in a comedy show.
